Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor has revealed the key area his team will work on heading into their second match of the 25/25 SportPesa League season.

This comes after the record Kenya champions began their 2025-26 campaign with a stunning 1-0 defeat to Bidco United on Sunday at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Despite K’Ogalo controlling possession for the majority of the match, they were caught off guard by a late penalty, which Bidco converted to secure an away victory.

Speaking after the match, the Ghanaian international described the loss as an unfortunate result, given his team’s dominance throughout the 90 minutes.

“The loss is unfortunate; we played 70% of the game, created opportunities, but just couldn’t find the back of the net. That’s the nature of football. We were a bit careless in defense, but we can’t blame the boys – they gave their all,” Akonnor remarked.

The match also marked Akonnor’s official debut since taking over the team a few weeks ago.

He emphasized that while his side performed well and generated promising attacks, the immediate task is to improve their conversion rate.

All we need to do is work on how we create those chances and, more importantly, how to finish them. In this match, we played well and were on the front foot, but our opponents defended resolutely,” the former Black Stars head coach stated.

Akonnor remains optimistic despite the opening-day setback, insisting the team will address the deficiencies in the final third.

To be successful, we need to work hard. When you create chances and don’t score, it’s a significant issue. That is exactly what we are going to focus on, ensuring we capitalize on the opportunities we create. I am positive about my boys,” he reiterated.

Gor Mahia will now aim to bounce back from this disappointing start when they travel to face Sofapaka on matchday two this coming Saturday.

Sofapaka also began their season strongly, holding AFC Leopards to a 1–1 draw, but Akonnor is confident his team can secure a positive result.
