The defending champions of the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN), Senegal, secured a third-place finish in the 2024 edition after defeating Sudan 4-2 in a penalty shootout on Friday night at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, Uganda.

As a result, the Lions of Teranga who were themselves eliminated by Morocco in a similar shootout in the semifinal, will take home $700,000 (approximately 91 million Kenyan shillings) from the Confederation of African Football.

Despite narrowly missing out on a podium finish Sudan, who exceeded expectations throughout the tournament, will receive $600,000 (about 78 million Kenyan shillings) for their fourth-place effort.

The atmosphere at Mandela Stadium was electrifying as Sudan began the encounter with intensity and just in the 5th minute, they broke the deadlock.

Abdel Raouf initiated a threatening move down the right wing, which led to a corner after Layousse Samb blocked his cross.

Sudan’s organized backline ensured they held a slender 1-0 lead at the break, despite Senegal’s dominance in possession.

Senegal came out reinvigorated in the second half, and their efforts bore fruit in the 57th minute.

Defender Seyni Mbaye Ndiaye rose above the Sudanese defense to head home a well-placed cross from Fall Seck, restoring parity with a powerful finish.

Ten minutes later, Bene Coly came close again with a left-footed effort, but Adam Saeed stood firm in goal, pulling off a superb save.

Senegal continued to mount pressure with a series of dangerous attacks, but Sudan’s custodian remained alert and composed throughout.

Sudan nearly stole victory in the 82nd minute when Maaz Kandani Koko broke free, bypassing two defenders and even goalkeeper Marc Philips only to squander the golden opportunity by failing to convert the open chance.

Despite both sides having late chances, neither team could break the deadlock in regular time, sending the match into penalties.

Sudan took the first penalty, but Walieldin Khedr fired wide.

They scored their next two through Mohamed Saeed Ahmed and Ahmed Yousif, but Musab Makeen was denied by Marc Philips.

Senegal, on the other hand, remained clinical.

Joseph Layousse Samb calmly converted his spot kick into the bottom left corner. Issa Kane, Vieux Cisse, and Libasse Guèye followed suit, with Gueye netting the decisive strike that sealed Senegal’s third-place finish.
