  • Strathmore Leos defeated Menengai Oilers 24-7 in the Embu 7s semifinal on Sunday afternoon at the Njukiri Showground.
  • KCB booked their place in the final after overcoming MMUST in the other semifinal clash.
  • Strathmore Leos and KCB will now face off in the final, their third meeting in the 2025 Sportpesa National Sevens Circuit, and the first at the inaugural Embu 7s tournament.

Strathmore Leos successfully overturned their previous disappointment against Menengai Oilers in the Christie 7s semifinal by edging them out in a thrilling Embu 7s last four clash held on Sunday afternoon at the Njukiri Showground.

The Leos, who secured their spot in a third final of the 2025 SportPesa National Circuit, had narrowly missed out on the Christie 7s final after a 24-19 defeat to the Oilers.

However, this time they rewrote the script, triumphing in a high-stakes encounter as they now set their sights on a second title of the series.

They will once again square off against KCB Rugby in the final, for the third time, and the first-ever at the Embu 7s, which is making its debut on the circuit.

The Bankers, cruised past MMUST in the first semifinal, securing a comfortable 31-7 victory.

Meanwhile, the Oilers will now turn their focus to securing third place as they prepare to take on MMUST in the playoff.

Embu 7s semifinal report

KCB 31-7 MMUST

Dennis Mwanja’s charges were quick off the blocks, drawing first blood through Festus Shiasi just two minutes into the match to claim an early 5-0 lead. Brian Wahinya’s conversion attempt, however, was off target.

Moments later, Wahinya executed a precise grubber kick down the left wing, allowing Vincent Onyala to collect the ball and touch down for their second try. With the conversion again falling short, KCB led 10-0.

Emmanuel Opondo then pierced through the MMUST defense after a lineout and dotted down between the posts, extending the lead to 17-0. This time, Wahinya added the extras, giving KCB a strong advantage at halftime.

Opondo opened the second half with his second try of the match, pushing the lead to 24-0 following another successful conversion by Wahinya. A minute later, Mike Wekesa compounded MMUST’s woes with a fifth try, bringing the score to 31-0 after yet another flawless kick.

MMUST salvaged some pride with a late converted try, but it wasn’t enough to overturn the deficit as KCB claimed a dominant 31-7 victory. MMUST will now contest the third-place playoff against the Oilers.

Strathmore Leos 24-7 Menengai Oilers

In a repeat of the Christie 7s semifinal, Strathmore Leos were first to strike, breaking the deadlock through Victor Mola’s try, which was confidently converted by Arnold Muita.

The Leos extended their lead thanks to a brilliant effort by Barnabas Owuor, with Muita again slotting the conversion to take the score to 14-0.

Vincent Mola notched his second try of the match, stretching the lead to 19-0, though the conversion attempt went wide.

Strathmore continued to assert dominance, and Mola recently crowned Prinsloo 7s Most Valuable Player completed his hat-trick to make it 24-0, sealing a sensational performance.
