The TCS New York City Marathon has witnessed magnificent performances in recent years and the 2025 edition promises to be even better. The organizers of the Abbott World Marathon Majors race announced the elite fields for the event that will be held on Sunday 2 November. Among the entries were the 2024 men’s and women’s champions Abdi Nageeye and Sheila Chepkirui.

Chepkirui, who hails from Kenya, produced an energetic performance to win the 2024 women open division.
She crossed the finishing line at 2:24.35 to beat the experienced duo of Hellen Obiri and Vivian Cheruiyot. Obiri and Cheruiyot clocked 2:24.49 and 2:25.21 respectively.

Speaking ahead of the 2025 edition, Chepkirui stated that she is expecting to register a positive result.
“Breaking the tape at the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon was a defining moment in my career.
After two successful trips to New York City last year, I look forward to returning and seeing what I can do,” she was quoted by the New York Road Runners website.

Chepkirui’s victory came a few minutes before Nageeye became the first ever Dutch runner to bag the coveted New York City Marathon title.
Nageeye, who often trains in Kenya, cut the tape at 2:07.39 to finish ahead of Kenyans Evans Chebet (2:07.45) and Albert Korir (2:08.00).

Apart from Chepkirui, Obiri, Cheruiyot, Chebet and Korir, several other Kenyan athletes will compete in the upcoming New York City Marathon.

These stars include the reigning Boston Marathon champion Sharon Lokedi, Edna Kiplagat, Abel Kipchumba, Benson Kipruto and Alexander Mutiso.
The Kenyan women will battle it out with the likes of Gotytom Gebreslase (Ethiopia), Eilish McColgan (USA) and Sara Hall (USA) while Deresa Geleta (Ethiopia) and Alphonce Simbu (Tanzania) will also be in action in the men’s category.
