- The Harambee Stars CHAN 2024 campaign was nothing short of remarkable.
- Harambee Stars topped Group A to advance to the quarterfinals with 10 points, remaining unbeaten throughout the group stage.
- President Ruto’s incentives, strong fan turnout, and Benni McCarthy’s coaching were the key elements that contributed to their remarkable performance in their CHAN debut.
When the tournament kicked off, Kenya’s men’s national team, Harambee Stars, were widely considered underdogs in what many dubbed the “Group of Death” at the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN). However, they defied all expectations.
For the first time in Kenyan football history, the Harambee Stars advanced to the quarterfinals after finishing top of Group A with 10 points, an impressive achievement in a group that featured two-time champions Morocco and DR Congo while Zambia, and Angola were also in.

Kenya secured hard-fought 1-0 victories over DR Congo, Morocco and Zambia, while managing a 1-1 draw against Angola despite being reduced to ten men.
As they now prepare to face Madagascar in the quarterfinal on Friday, August 22, SportPesa Blog examines the key factors behind this historic milestone for the Harambee Stars.

President Ruto incentives boost Harambee Stars CHAN 2024 morale
The Head of State has played a pivotal role in motivating the team, offering generous financial incentives that have visibly lifted player morale.
His support has not only been vocal but tangible, with each group stage win earning players KES 1 million each, including the technical staff.
A draw was rewarded with KES 500,000 per player.

After the victory over DR Congo and the draw against Angola, the players promptly received their bonuses.
The biggest surprise came ahead of the final group match against Zambia when the President increased the winning bonus to KES 2.5 million per player-a move that reportedly boosted morale significantly. The Stars delivered, edging Zambia 1-0.
Looking ahead, the stakes are even higher: KES 1 million and a two-bedroom house await players if they reach the semifinals, while qualifying for the final will earn them a three-bedroom house and an additional KES 1 million.
Given the financial struggles of most local-league players, these incentives are truly life-changing and have undoubtedly inspired the team to give their all on the pitch.
Unmatched Harambee Stars fans support
Kenyan fans have been nothing short of phenomenal throughout CHAN 2024.
For every fixture in Group A, not just those featuring the Harambee Stars, the Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums consistently attracted crowds numbering no fewer than 5,000.
The fans have been the team’s 12th man since day one.

The opening clash against DR Congo saw over 44,000 supporters pack Kasarani Stadium, creating an electric atmosphere that pushed the Stars to a vital win.
The second match against Angola, played under the floodlights, witnessed a roaring 46,520 fans rally behind the team as they held their opponents to a 1-1 draw, despite being a man down.

The Morocco match was absolute madness; an overwhelming and electric crowd helped the team secure a 1-0 win.
However, the massive turnout reportedly over 70,000, led to a fine from CAF, which capped subsequent attendance at 27,000.
Despite this restriction, over 26,000 fans packed the stadium for the Zambia match and drove the team to another three points with a 1-0 win.

Therefore, underestimating the power of the deafening chants and phenomenal turnouts would be a mistake; they have played an indispensable role.
The atmosphere was so intense that drums and vuvuzelas were reportedly confiscated.
Tactical brilliance from coach Benni McCarthy
Since his appointment as head coach in March 2025, Benni McCarthy has brought renewed energy, structure, and belief to the Harambee Stars.
His deep understanding of the game which has been shaped by a successful European career with FC Porto (where he won the Champions League) and coaching experience at Manchester United, has transformed the team’s approach.
McCarthy’s tactical adjustments throughout the group stage were both bold and effective.

His in-game substitutions injected energy, and his defensive strategies, particularly when Kenya was reduced to ten men against Angola and Morocco demonstrated a Mourinho-esque mastery of game management, likely inspired by his time under Jose Mourinho at FC Porto.
In addition to his tactical acumen, the players have described him as a mentor who offers invaluable advice and manages them effectively.
Credit must also go to the rest of the technical team, including assistant coach Vasili Manusakis, analyst Nick Kimanthi, goalkeeper coach Joseph Moeneeb, and the medical staff, all of whom have ensured the players remain in peak condition.
Now, with more in store, the Harambee Stars will continue to strive for excellence, aiming to push beyond their limits and ensure they reach the final, to be staged right here in Nairobi at Kasarani Stadium.
