Harambee Stars defied the odds on Sunday, August 10, 2025 to beat Morocco 1-0 in a thrilling match that was played at the Kasarani Stadium. This was the first ever win for Kenya against the North Africans in their competitive head-to-head history.

The Kenya football team scored their goal in the final stages of the first half through Ryan Ogam.

Ogam, who scored 15 goals for Tusker FC in the 2025-2026 Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League season, neatly controlled the ball inside the opponent’s box before firing a shot into the net.

However, shortly after taking a 1-0 lead, Harambee Stars were reduced to 10-men after Chrispine Erambo was red carded for a dangerous tackle on a Moroccan player.

Despite being a man down, the Benni McCarthy tutored side continued with their amazing fight spirit that ensured they went to the break without conceding.

At the beginning of the second half, McCarthy decided to make a substitution which increased the tempo of his charges, who sat deep in their own half and tried to catch the Atlas Lions on the counter.

The energetic display from the Kenya soccer team nearly led to a second goal when Ogam found himself with one defender and goalkeeper to beat but he did not control the ball well.

McCarthy made several other changes as the match went on, introducing the likes of Alphonce Omija and the team’s skipper Abud Omar.

The compelling performance caught the attention of Kenya’s President William Ruto, who assured the players that they will receive the Ksh 1,000,000 each as he had promised them for every win they register at CHAN 2024.

“Once again, the resilient, indomitable Kenyan spirit has roared to life at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani! Harambee Stars stood tall, defying the odds to defeat one of the tournament’s giants -Morocco – even after being reduced to 10 men for the much of the match.

Kenya is rising. We are conquering arenas where no one thought we could stand, let alone triumph! This is Kenya. We believe. We fight. We rise. Congratulations to our boys . You have done your part. I will do my part,” read a statement from Ruto.
