Gor Mahia, who ended the FKF Premier League 2024/2025 season without a trophy, confirmed Akonnor’s appointment on Friday, August 1, 2025.
The experienced manager, who has coached several clubs in Ghana, signed a two year deal with Gor Mahia.

Who is the new Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor?
Akonnor, who was born on March 12, 1974 in Nungua, Ghana, is a respected man in African football.

He made a name for himself in his impressive playing career that saw him feature for top clubs in Europe including VfL Wolfsburg and the Ghana national men’s football team, popularly known as “The Black Stars”.
Akonnor, who attended Nungua Primary and Junior High School, fell in love with the beautiful game at a younger age.
He represented the learning institutions he attended in various tournaments and inter-school championships.

Akonnor’s remarkable playing career
Akonnor had an impressive professional football career. At club level, he had stints with German based clubs VfL Wolfsburg and Fortuna Köln.
He joined Fortuna Köln in 1992 and went on to make more than 150 appearances in the six seasons that he spend at the club.
His thrilling displays at the heart of Fortuna Köln midfield caught the eyes of various scouts and in the end earned him a move to VfL Wolfsburg.

At Wolfsburg, Akonnor continued with his eye-catching performances that led to him being appointed the club’s captain in the 2000-2001 season.
Apart from VfL Wolfsburg and Fortuna Köln, the new Gor Mahia head coach also had spells with Danish based side AC Horsens, SpVgg Unterhaching (Germany) and Alki Larnaca (Cyprus).
On the other hand, Akonnor was one of the influential players in the Black Stars squad especially between 1998 and 2001 where he served as the team’s captain.
Akonnor, who was part of the Ghana national team that took part in the 1994, 1996, 1998, and 2000 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments took over the armband from the legendary Abedi Ayew.

In total, the defensive midfielder scored 13 goals in the 51 appearances that he made for the Black Stars.
Akonnor’s managerial career
Besides playing, Akonnor has also build a name for himself as a tactically astute coach.
He started his coaching career with Ghanaian club Sekondi Wise Fighters in 2009 before going to manage the likes of Ashanti Gold, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak.
Akonnor’s most successful stint as a coach came in 2019 when he guided Asante Kotoko to the GFA Normalization Committee Special Competition title.
After his stint with Asante Kotoko, Akonnor went on to serve as the head coach of the Ghana national men’s football team between 2020 and 2021.
