Under the beautiful Parisian sky, highly-rated Kenyan runner Faith Cherotich delivered a commanding display to win the 3000m women’s steeplechase race at the Paris Diamond League 2025.

In a tough race that had the likes of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games champion Peruth Chemutai of Uganda and French star Alice Finot, Cherotich displayed her strategic brilliance.

She ran alongside the leading group before deciding to take matters on her hands at the closing stages of the race.

Faith Cherotich achieves a new personal best in Paris Diamond League 2025

The 20-year-old, who is expected to celebrate her birthday next month, went on to cross the finishing line in an a world lead and a personal best time of 8:53.37.

Cherotich was closely followed by her East African rivals Chemutai and Sembo Almayew of Ethiopia, who clocked season bests time of 8:54.41 and 9:01.22 in that order.

Three consecutive Diamond League meeting wins for Faith Cherotich

This was the third consecutive Wanda Diamond League meeting win for Cherotich since making her first appearance of the season in Doha where she triumphed in 9:05.08.

After the victory in Doha, the Kapsabet based athlete went on to win the Oslo Diamond League title on Thursday, June 12, 2025, crossing the finish line in a world lead time of 9:02.60.

The Paris Diamond League 2025 victory puts Cherotich in a good position of winning the elusive 3000m women’s steeplechase gold medal for Kenya in the upcoming Tokyo World Athletics Championships.

Kenyan has not tasted glory in the discipline since the 2019 Doha edition where the reigning world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech clinched the coveted title in a sensational fashion.

Faith Cherotich’s compatriot sets a new 1500m U20 world record

In another race, fast-rising Kenyan runner Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech smashed the 1500m U20 world record.

Koech crossed the finishing line in 3:27.72 to settle for a second position behind home boy Azeddine Habz, who set a new French national record time of 3:27.47, which was also a world lead.

The third and fourth positions went to Great Britain’s George Mills (3:28.36) and Kenya’s Festus Lagat (3:29.03).

Nelly Chepchirchir bags 1500m women’s title in Paris Diamond League 2025

Elsewhere, Kenya’s Nelly Chepchirchir dazzled in the 1500m women’s category, clocking a season best time of 3:57.02 to beat Sarah Healy (3:57.02) and Birke Haylom (3:57.50). Healy and Haylom hail from Ireland and Ethiopia respectively.

Cherotich and the other Kenyan runners are expected to return home after the Paris Diamond League 2025 to prepare for other upcoming races.
