- Cheche credited coach Etienne Ndayiragije, who took over when the team was in the relegation zone, for turning their season around with an attacking tactical approach.
Kenya Police FC captain David “Cheche” Ochieng has unveiled the strategic approach implemented by head coach Etienne Ndayiragije, which propelled the team to their maiden top-flight championship.
With one game remaining in the 2024/25 season, the law enforcers secured their first-ever Premier League crown on Sunday, June 15, following a hard-fought 1-0 win over Shabana FC at the Kenyatta Stadium.
Police clinched the title with 63 points toppling former champions Gor Mahia, who had dominated the league for the past two seasons, including winning the title last season with 73 points.
Speaking to Tata Sports after the match, the former Tusker FC defender expressed immense gratitude for achieving this milestone, marking his second Premier League title, his first being with 12-time champions Tusker in 2012.
I’m now a champion with Kenya Police – my second league title after lifting it with Tusker FC in 2012. It’s taken me 13 years to reach this moment again, and I truly believe God has been by my side throughout. I’m incredibly thankful,” said Cheche.

The seasoned defender, who also had a stint with AFC Leopards, emphasized that the 2024/25 season has been one of the most competitive in recent history, not only for Kenya Police but for nearly every team in the league.
The pressure throughout the season has been high, the games have been hard. This season, everyone can see that from the first place to the tenth, they had only survived the league.
The rest, no one knew who was going to be relegated, and who was going to be the champion in the last two matches. It has really been a tough season for everyone, but the moment we clinched the title, it means we really worked hard for it,” he explained.
Cheche on how Ettienne led Kenya Police to their first League title
Cheche went on to detail the tactical shift initiated by Ndayiragije, who took over when the team was languishing in the relegation zone.
The Burundian tactician transformed their fortunes with a bold, attacking philosophy.
First, I want to thank the coaches who have been here – the Babu regime and Kimani era. And now Ettienne came, and he pushed us very well. He came and found us in the relegation zone, and our belief had gone down.
So he came in and told us he had checked the league, and we started to play attacking football. He pushed us a lot, and we have fought until now. We have taken the championship because no match was easy for us this season.”

Cheche dedicates title to his “hero mother” after 13-year wait
The Kenya international also dedicated the historic triumph to his mother, whom he hailed as his pillar of strength.
I want to dedicate this win to my mother because she has been like my father since my dad left us. She has been with me all the way. I also want to dedicate the championship to anyone who has been behind me all through, and I want to tell God thank you for that.”
Kenya Police FC are set to receive a guard of honor on Sunday, June 22, when they face off against Gor Mahia in their final league fixture a fitting end to a remarkable campaign.
