The second-string men’s national rugby sevens team, Kenya Morans, has unveiled its final squad for the Rugby Africa Men’s 7s Cup, scheduled to take place at the Labourdonnais Sports Club in Mauritius from 21–22 June 2025.

Under the guidance of Kenya 7s assistant coach Louis Kisia, the Morans have integrated four debutants into the squad as they prepare for the tournament, which offers the top two teams a chance to secure promotion to SVNS Division 3 under World Rugby’s newly launched 7s structure.

The newcomers feature Nakuru RFC back Javan Otieno, former Kenya U20 captain Matoka Matoka who both are returning to the squad after a spell on the sidelines alongside Phillip Okeyo and Felix Okoth, who will make their first appearance at this level.

The team will be captained by George ‘Japolo’ Ooro, with Chrisant Onjwang serving as vice-captain.

Onjwang is making a comeback after missing most of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series due to an injury sustained in the opening leg in Dubai last year.

William Mwanji and Dennis Abukuse, who both made their Kenya 7s debut during the Dubai leg in 2024, have also been selected. Floyd Wabwire joins them in the final traveling contingent.

Jackson Siketi, the promising Kabras Sugar youngster, retains his spot, alongside his fellow Morans Brian Mutua and Lameck Ambetsa.

Having already secured their berth in SVNS Division 2, Kenya enters the tournament aiming to reclaim the African crown they lost to Uganda last year, after finishing sixth across both legs of the 2024 edition that also was held in Mauritius.

In their pool (Pool A), Kenya will face off against arch-rivals Uganda, the defending champions, as well as Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana.

Pool B has heavyweights South Africa, who won the 2025 HSBC SVNS World Championship, Burkina Faso, Zambia and Nigeria while Pool C has Madagascar, Zimbabwe, Tunisia and hosts Mauritius.

Kenya 7s aim to reclaim Rugby Africa Men’s Cup

The last time Kenya lifted the continental trophy was in 2023, and Coach Kisia is resolute in his mission to bring the title back home.

There is always everything to play for when you take to the field. The boys always want to win and make a good name for themselves. If you go to the Africa Sevens and win it, then you become African champions,” Kisia told SportPesa Blog.

Remember the last time we were African champions was in 2023, when we smashed South Africa and qualified for the Olympics. We became the Africa champs. So we want that title back. The group that achieved that is not here now, so it is an opportunity for these boys to make a name for themselves.”
