AFC Leopards Captain
  • Clifton Miheso has attributed his limited playing time at AFC Leopards this season to persistent injury setbacks.

AFC Leopards skipper Clifton Miheso has revealed that injury setbacks have significantly hindered his ability to contribute consistently to the team this season.

Miheso, who rejoined the club in 2023, has predominantly featured as a substitute throughout the campaign, as Ingwe once again fell out of the title race, extending their championship drought to nearly four decades.

In the 21 matches where Miheso has been included in the matchday squad, he has started only nine – eight in the league and one in the FKF Cup while missing 11 games out of the 32 that AFC Leopards have played this season.

His most recent appearance came during the Mashemeji Derby against Gor Mahia, where he came off the bench to help the team secure a 1-1 draw earlier this month in Homa Bay.

Speaking exclusively to SportPesa Blog, Miheso attributed his limited game time to recurring injuries, while also acknowledging the intense competition for places within the squad.

This season has been quite tough for me mostly due to persistent injuries. Whenever you see me absent from the pitch, it’s likely due to fitness concerns. On the other hand, the internal competition has been fierce.

We’ve had a well-balanced squad, and I believe it’s only a matter of time before this team starts climbing the ranks again,” Miheso stated.

AFC Leopards determined to finish strong

Currently placed sixth on the log with 47 points and two matches remaining, Miheso admitted that although the team fell short of their ultimate goal, they remain determined to end the season on a strong note.

At AFC Leopards, our target every season is to win the league. Unfortunately, we’ve fallen short this time. That said, our focus now is to wrap up the season with strong performances in the final two fixtures and carry that momentum into next season as we aim for silverware,” he added.

The former Gor Mahia winger noted that despite the season not going as planned, it’s difficult to pinpoint a single cause for the underwhelming performance. He emphasized the need for a collective review and strategic planning.

You can’t blame one area when it comes to missing out on a title it’s a collective effort across all departments. We’ll need to go back to the drawing board, reflect on what went wrong, and come back stronger next season,” Miheso concluded.

The Fred Ambani-led side will aim to finish the campaign on a high when they face FC Talanta on Saturday, June 14, before concluding the season against KCB on the weekend of June 22.
