Kenyan runner Sabastian Sawe won the 2025 London Marathon title in a sensational fashion on Sunday afternoon.

Sawe, who was competing at the London Marathon for the first time in his career, clinched the title in a time of 2:02.27.

Sawe was followed by Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo and Alexander Mutiso Munyao of Kenya.

Kiplimo clocked a personal best time of 2:03.37, which is also a new Ugandan national record in his first full marathon race.

On the other hand, , Munyao, who trains in Ngong, crossed the finishing line at 2:04.20 ahead of Dutch runner Abdi Nageeye and Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola.

Meanwhile, four time London Marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge clocked 2:05.25 which was enough to guarantee him the sixth position.

Tigist Assefa wins women’s title at the 2025 London Marathon

As for the women’s category, the title went to Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa, who crossed the finishing line in a women’s only world record time of 2:15.50.

Assefa was followed by Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei (2:18.44) with the reigning Olympic Games champion Sifan Hassan clocking 2:19.00 to complete the podium positions.

Sawe and Assefa to receive millions after starring at 2025 London Marathon

Sawe and Assefa are expected to be awarded handsomely for their excellent performances at the 2025 London Marathon.

Sawe, who missed the current course record of 2:01.25 that was set by his late compatriot Kelvin Kiptum at the 2023 edition, is expected to receive $55,000 (approximately Ksh 7,122,500 as per the current exchange rate) for winning the men’s title.

On the other hand, Assefa will receive a bonus of $125,000 (around Ksh 16,187,500) for setting a new women’s world record.

The above prize money that Sawe and Assefa will receive shall be subjected to the usual taxation procedure, hence it is expected to reduce.
