John Korir of Kenya overcame a star-studded field to win the prestigious 2025 Boston Marathon title on Monday.

Korir, who has won a couple of road races in recent years, ran a fantastic race to bag the Boston Marathon title in the second fastest time in the history of the race of 2:04.45.

The 28-year-old runner was followed by Tanzania’s Alphonce Simbu and Kenya’s Cybrian Kotut.

Simbu outpaced Kotut in the final stages of the race to cross the finishing line in 2:05.04 ahead of Kotut, who clocked a similar time.

Korir’s 2025 Boston Marathon win helps him to equal his brother’s record

The victory ensured the fast-rising star becomes the second person in his family to secure the Boston Marathon title after his elder brother Wesley Korir, who triumphed in the streets of the American city in 2012.

Speaking after the remarkable display, a delighted Korir stated that he had assured his elder sibling that he was going to shine.

“I had promised him that I am going to win. Now, I’m the fastest in the family,” he revealed.

The race started at a quick pace with the leading group that had the likes of 2024 winner Sisay Lemma, and the Kenyan trio of Korir, Evans Chebet and Kotut breaking away from the rest of the group at about the 10km mark.

These runners went on to cross the 15km mark in a time of 43 minutes and before passing the 25km mark in 1:13.37.

Sadly, Lemma, who was seeking to defend his Boston Marathon trophy, dropped out of the race at mile 16.

As the race went on, Korir decided to break away from the rest of the leading pack at the 20 mile mark.

The reigning Chicago Marathon champion did not look back and went on to cut the tape in an sensational fashion.

Korir is expected to be awarded a mouthwatering prize money of $150,000 (approximately Ksh 9,425,000) for winning the 2025 Boston Marathon.

Meanwhile, Simbu and Kotut will each receive $75,000 and $40,000 respectively for their amazing performances.

April has been a good month for Kenyan runners particularly those taking part in the half marathon discipline.

Earlier this weekend Roncer Kipkorir Konga and led his compatriots Edmond Kipngetich and Isaac Kipkemboi into a podium sweep in the 2025 Shanghai Half Marathon.

In addition, Geoffrey Kamworor and Jackline Cherono won the 2025 Rotterdam Marathon titles in the women’s and men’s categories in that order on April 13.

Based on the performances of these stars, most Kenyan athletics fans are optimistic that their fellow citizens will do wonders in the upcoming road races..

After the 2025 Boston Marathon, the focus shifts to the upcoming London Marathon that is expected to be held on Sunday, April 27. The main attractions in this year’s London Marathon include Sifan Hassan, Eliud Kipchoge, Jacob Kiplimo and Sabastian Sawe.
