Kenya 7s speedster Patrick Odongo is thrilled after helping Shujaa secure their first cup final appearance in the HSBC SVNS Series 2025, defeating Spain 12-5 in the Singapore 7s semifinals on Sunday morning, April 6, 2025.

Both of Kenya’s tries against Spain were orchestrated by Odongo, who has consistently demonstrated his brilliance while donning the iconic jersey number 11, a legacy once worn by legends like Collins Injera.

Moreover, Odongo continues to dominate the Kenya 7s try-scoring charts in the HSBC SVNS Series 2025 campaign with an impressive tally of 20 tries, cementing his prowess not only for the national team but also etching his name in history as the sole Kenyan selected for the groundbreaking Rugby Premier League (RPL).

This pioneering franchise-based rugby sevens league will feature elite HSBC SVNS Series stars.

Reflecting on the two tries that propelled Kenya into their first final since their last appearance at the Hong Kong 7s in 2018, Odongo shared his excitement.

He noted that, despite their youth, the team is constantly learning, and he is eager to see where the final will take them.

I can say the boys are really excited. We’re young, we’re growing,This is our first time with a podium finish [this season].We really appreciate the work the boys are doing and we’re ready to do the work and let’s see where the final takes us,” Odongo told RugbyPass after the match.

He further emphasized the team’s determination to win, acknowledging the effort the players put in.

“We’re always determined to win… all the boys put in that hard work on the pitch,” He added.

Shujaa vs Fiji

Kenya is now set to face Fiji in the main cup final, a team they are familiar with.

This will be the second encounter between the two sides in the 2025 HSBC SVNS series, following their previous meeting at the Perth Sevens, where Kenya lost 21-14.

However, Kenya will seek revenge in this historic final in Singapore, remembering the last time they met in the finals in 2016, when Kenya defeated Fiji 30-7 to clinch the title.

With the dominant performance they’ve shown in this sixth round, the national team is determined to replicate that victory.

Despite the glory moments in Singapore, Kenya is set to compete in the relegation/promotion playoffs in Los Angeles this May, after finishing outside the top eight in the series standings.
