Benni McCarthy

Benedict Saul McCarthy well known as Benni McCarthy is a reputable South African football coach currently managing the Kenyan national football team. He has signed contracts with prominent Premier League teams such as West Ham United, Blackburn Rovers and FC Porto. His commitment to coaching made McCarthy secure a precious opportunity of being Manchester United’s assistant coach.

McCarthy was a forward player before advancing to coaching. He still holds the title of being the top scorer in the South African national team and he’s the only South African who has won the UEFA Champions League. He currently coaches the Kenyan national team.

Early beginnings

He was born on November 12, 1977 in Cape Town and was brought up in Hanover Park in Cape Flats. Benni McCarthy’s parents helped nurture his talent from a younger age. This Hanover Park is believed to have a high number of unemployed people and is prone to gang fights. McCarthy started exploring his talent at Young Pirates managed by his uncles. He later signed with Seven Stars when he attained the age of 17 years.

Benni’s club career with Seven Stars

At 18 years, he had dived into football and his skills were excellent. He scored a goal in 29 matches and later on netted 12 goals in 20 games. This was a game changer for McCarthy as it earned him a slot at Cape Town Spurs. The club later on merged with Seven Stars and formed Ajax feeder team in Ajax Cape Town.

Club career at Ajax

On 1997 he joined Ajax in Eredivisie, after performing excellently in the African Youth Championship and FIFA World Youth Championship held in Malaysia. He scored 9 goals and emerged the champion in the first season. Celta Vigo showed great interest in him and later signed for the team with a transfer fee of €6 million.

His determination and consistency in developing his football career at Celta Vigo did not meet the requirements of Victor Fernandez, Celta Vigo’s coach. He joined Porto in 2001-2002 football season on loan after playing for 2 seasons at the Galician club.

He took part in the African Nations Cup playing for the Bafana Bafana who did not qualify to proceed past the quarter-finals. He helped Porto ladder upto the 3rd place in the Primeira Liga and also helped the team secure automatic qualification to the UEFA Cup by scoring 12 goals in 11 matches.

He returned to Celta Vigo as Porto’s finances did not allow them to keep the player despite the desire of both sides to continue. When Porto sold striker Hélder Postiga to Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the 2003–04 season, they acquired him for €7.856 million.

How was his career at FC Porto?

In the 2003-2004 Primeira Liga season, McCarthy earned the Golden Boot award for having the highest number of goals (20 goals in 23 matches) and for scoring a hat-trick. Porto defeated Manchester United in the second round with McCarthy scoring two victory goals.

Blackburn Rovers career

McCarthy joined Blackburn Rovers on 28th July 2005 on a 4-year contract for a £2.5 million transfer fee. He scored against Everton St Ewood Park on 23rd August 2006. He also made the nets tremble in a match against Red Bull Salzburg in Salzburg that ended with a 2-2 draw. He was named the second top scorer in the Premier league with 18 goals in 2006-2007 and 24 goals overall. McCarthy scored 52 goals in 140 matches for Blackburn.

McCarthy moved to West Ham United for an unknown amount on the last day of the transfer window. He later signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with West Ham on 1st February 2010. McCarthy’s debut for West Ham was against Burnley at Turf Moor on 6th February.

Orlando Pirates signed McCarthy on a 2-year deal and he promised to lead the team to victory. In the 1998 FIFA World Cup, South Africa were eliminated in the group stage after two 1-1 draws against Denmark and Saudi Arabia that followed a 3-0 defeat against France.

In 2002, McCarthy scored for South Africa against Spain in the World Cup competition but lost 3-2, resulting in their elimination from the competition in the group stage.

He retired from playing international matches after the 2002 World Cup but returned to play in 2004 and made a great international goal record for South Africa, breaking Shaun Bartlett’s 29-goal record after scoring in 3-0 win against Paraguay in 2008. He was later removed from the South African team on 1st June 2010 after failing to maintain his physical fitness in the team.

Coaching career at Hibernian Fc

In April 2015, Benny McCarthy’s coaching career started at Scottish club Hibernian owned by Alan Stubbs. They knew each other during a match when Stubbs was playing for Everton and McCarthy was at Blackburn Rovers. McCarthy had mentioned about his interest in helping U20 team and the first team to him. Alan Stubbs invited him to learn about coaching in football at Scottish club Hibernian.

McCarthy replaced Ayanda Dlamini in the head coach position of AmaZulu on 14th December 2020.He used his coaching skills which yielded their qualification for the CAF Champions League preliminary rounds of 2021-2022.This was a historic record for the AmaZulu regarding their game performance in South Africa. They proceeded to group stages where they got disqualified. He later on left AmaZulu on 25th March 2022.

Manchester United managerial career

McCarthy popularity led to him signing with Manchester United on 30th July 2022. He managed the team up to 37th June 2024. He had turned down his contract renewal with Manchester United due to his return to being a head coach.
