Menengai Oilers are on the verge of making history by winning their first-ever Kenya Cup trophy after securing a spot in the finals with a dominant 8-31 victory over KCB Rugby on Saturday evening.

This marked their fifth consecutive meeting with KCB, and the Oilers were determined to break the Bankers’ dominance over them, having been denied semifinal spots in the past two seasons.

In their pursuit of ending KCB’s reign, the Oilers took the lead within the first five minutes of the game with a try from Nelson Makokha.

Timothy Omela added the extras, having earlier missed a penalty conversion, giving the Oilers a 0-7 advantage.

Gibson Weru charges, controlled much of the play in KCB’s half, and shortly after, the Oilers added another five points with a try from Fortune Arturo, which Omela converted brilliantly to extend their lead to 0-14.

KCB responded with a try from Andycole Omollo, narrowing the score to 5-14, but Austin Sikutwa missed the conversion. The Oilers quickly retaliated with a penalty conversion from Omela who increased their lead to 5-17.

The Oilers’ dominance remained unshaken, even as KCB attempted a comeback. They conceded another penalty, which Omela successfully converted, making the score 5-20.

Just a minute before halftime, KCB tried to break through the Oilers’ defense, but the Oilers stood firm.

However, the Oilers did concede a penalty, and Sikutwa converted to reduce the gap to 8-20 as the teams went into the break.

The second half began with KCB attempting to fight for points, but the Weru-led defense proved impenetrable, preventing any breakthroughs.

The Oilers were awarded two penalties some moment later, which Omela calmly seized to add six more points, increasing their lead to 8-26.

Crispin Shitundo delivered the final blow with a try, further demoralizing KCB, and pushing the score to 8-31.

The Oilers secured the win and progressed to their second-ever final.

Menengai Oilers have never won the Kenya Cup trophy and their primary goal is to break that curse as they face Kabras RFC in the final.
