Mathare United head coach John Kamau has expressed his disappointment with his team’s performance after they dropped two points in a 1-1 draw against Murang’a SEAL on Sunday afternoon at the SportPesa Arena.
Mathare has made progress, moving away from the relegation zone and currently sitting in 12th place, five points clear of bottom-placed Nairobi City Stars who have 22 points.
Although the team remains unbeaten in their last four matches (1 win, 3 draws), Kamau is not entirely satisfied with the single point they earned against Murang’a, emphasizing that the team deserved more.
“Those are two points dropped today and I believe we deserve more than this. However, we appreciate the point and will build on it,” Kamau said after the match.

He further elaborated on the mistakes made during the game, particularly in the second half, which saw Murang’a SEAL dominate. Kamau pinpointed the failure to handle long balls as a key factor in their struggles.
“This was a matter of dealing with long balls and, of course, the players were not fully understanding their basic roles. In the second half, Murang’a SEAL resorted to long balls more frequently, and that became the turning point of the game.
On the left side, we conceded a throw-in, which led to a corner, and we were unable to defend them,” he explained.
Kamau expressed frustration with the result, noting that his primary goal is to guide the team out of the relegation battle.
He stressed that if they continue to drop points, it could be detrimental to their survival.
“My friends, I am disappointed with the result today because our priority is to escape the relegation zone as quickly as possible.
If we keep on dropping points like this, it will hinder our progress. The most important thing now is to solidify our positions. If we are leading by a goal, we must defend that lead. We deserved more than what we saw today,” he reiterated.
With 11 matches remaining in the 2024/25 FKFPL season, Mathare United is focused on staying in the top tier for the second consecutive season after their promotion this season.
