President Hussein Mohammed in a meeting with the branch members

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has unveiled plans to introduce a county-based league as part of his commitment to incentivizing excellence at the grassroots level.

Hussein made this significant announcement on Saturday, February 15, 2025, during a meeting with representatives from all FKF branches to discuss key strategies for advancing grassroots football in Kenya.

The gathering was attended by Vice President McDonald Mariga, NEC members, key secretariat staff, and branch chairpersons, all focused on strengthening county and regional football structures.

The meeting primarily centered on restructuring county and regional leagues to create a more competitive and well-organized framework.

The federation also explored strategic partnerships to support sustainable football development and deliberated on introducing new competitions to provide young players with better opportunities to progress within the football ecosystem.

To ensure quality football at the grassroots level, improving infrastructure emerged as the federation’s top priority. The aim is to upgrade football facilities across counties to enhance both training and matchday environments.

In response to the ongoing issue of hooliganism, the federation has called on each branch to submit a list of trained matchday stewards to improve match control and security, and to combat disruptive behavior.

With a clear vision for the growth of Kenyan football, FKF President Hussein Mohammed also announced a Ksh 1 million reward for the best-performing FKF branch at the end of each season.

This reward will be based on the quality of league management and operations, aiming to motivate county branches to uphold high standards in football administration and development.

Furthermore, he introduced plans for a new county-based league where each county will organize structured competitions.

The respective winners will receive Ksh 100,000 as an initial reward, with the tournament culminating in an inter-county showdown, where the overall winner will be crowned National Counties Champion.

“Grassroots football is the heartbeat of our game, and today’s discussions mark an important step towards building a well-structured and sustainable football system across all counties.

By introducing these rewards and competitions, we aim to inspire our branches to maintain high standards in football management and provide young players with a solid platform to grow.

We will continue engaging stakeholders to implement these strategies and lay a strong foundation for the future of Kenyan football,” FKF President Hussein Mohammed explained.
