Gor Mahia and Tusker FC players in action

Police FC will enjoy a two-point lead at the top of the Football Kenya Federation Premier League standings after Tusker FC and Gor Mahia played to a goalless draw on Sunday evening at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos County.

The law enforcers, who triumphed 2-0 against Bidco United on Saturday, move ahead with 41 points.

Tusker, who needed a win to draw level on points, remain in second with 39 points, while Kenya’s record champions Gor Mahia are in third place, accumulating 35 points—four behind the Brewers and six behind Police.

However, Gor Mahia still have a game in hand.

Additionally, this is the second match for Gor Mahia’s new head coach, Croatian Sinisa Mihic, and his first at home. His debut away match was against Mathare United, where Gor triumphed 2-1 at Dandora Stadium.

As the title race intensifies, Charles Okere’s side has now dropped six points in their last three matches, all of which ended in draws, despite being unbeaten in six consecutive games.

They played to a 0-0 draw against KCB before being held to another scoreless draw by Police FC last weekend.

In Machakos, a wasted opportunity from a free kick by Tusker FC just two minutes into the game was the first attempt by the visitors. Chrispine Erambo’s header was saved by Kevin Omondi, ensuring his goal remained unbreached.

Two minutes later, Tusker had another chance to take the lead. Erick Balecho’s shot, from a well-placed cross by Dennis Wanjala on the left wing, lacked precision and sailed wide, resulting in a goal kick.

Gor Mahia’s first dangerous attempt came in the 17th minute, when Paul Ochouga delivered a swift cross from the right wing, but Brian Opondo made a crucial save to deny the hosts an opening goal.

This was followed by another chance in the 29th minute, when Bryson Wangai stepped up for a free kick. However, Alpha Onyango’s header lacked the power to alter the match’s dynamics.

Just before halftime, Sharrif Musa had a shot, but the game remained a cagey affair in the first half.

At the start of the second half, Okere made his first substitution, bringing on Denis Iguma and Dennis Oguta for Fabian Adikiny and James Kibande to add fresh legs to the match.

Gor Mahia also made changes, introducing Ronney Onyango and Gedeon Bendeka in place of Paul Ochouga and Charles Bbaale.

Despite the two teams making further substitutions, the second half lacked the intensity of the first, with the final whistle signaling a stalemate.

Both teams will now return to the drawing board, with Gor Mahia set to visit Bidco United on Wednesday, 19 February, while Tusker will aim to return to winning ways when they host Shabana on Thursday.
