Mathare United head coach John Kamau is disappointed with some of the players in his squad, describing them as of low quality and unfit to play for a top-flight club.
Mathare, who gained promotion from the National Super League this season, have experienced both highs and lows, dropping points due to inconsistent performances as they have only managed one win in their last eight matches.
Last Saturday, February, the Slum Boys were held to a 1-1 draw by FC Talanta, a result that left them in 14th place in the standings with 21 points from five wins, six draws, and seven defeats.

Reacting to the stalemate, Kamau stated that the players should take the opportunities given to them seriously.
He also mentioned that the changes he made during the match were not effective as the result did not change after dropping two points instead of earning one.
“When you get an opportunity, it is your time to showcase what you have. The substitutions against Talanta were a waste and this is one of the games that I am really disappointed in,” Kamau told Flashscore
“We wasted too many chances and to me, it’s two points dropped and not one earned,” he added.

Kamau made two changes that day, bringing in Meshack Ochieno and Derrick Anami for Dan Odhiambo and Paul Kinyanjui but the result remained the same, with the two teams sharing the spoils.
The former KCB head coach, frustrated, added that it is fortunate the transfer window is open, as he plans to bolster his squad with players who can help the team win matches rather than relying on the current average performers.
“Let us talk of two points dropped (against Talanta) but it is good that the mid-season transfer window is now open because I think there are some players here whose quality is way below the Premier League. Actually I don’t know what to say about the players, I have nothing to say,” he added.
“We have to bring in some players, we have to bring in quality players because I don’t think what we have what we really need. For this team, and for it to remain in the Premier League for next season, we will need to make drastic changes, new players must be considered,” he said.

Mathare United remedy?
Kamau, who has been nicknamed “Guardiola” for his playing style similar to that of English manager Pep Guardiola, stated that he cannot undermine the current squad, as they have played according to their abilities. He commended them for their efforts.
“For the current squad, I can say they have done something as per their quality, I can’t bring them down and I can’t fail to commend them for what they have done so far.
But I think we need to go back to the drawing board, and the drawing board is just to bring in some quality players and then we move on from there,” he noted.
