Kakamega Homeboyz will aim to extend their unbeaten streak to eight matches when they host Kenya’s reigning champions Gor Mahia on Sunday January 26 at the Mumias Sports Complex in Kakamega County.

The anticipated match is set to kick off at 2:00 PM EAT with both teams in high spirits following recent victories.

Gor Mahia comes into the match after a 2-0 triumph over Sofapaka in their midweek fixture at Kenyatta Stadium.

Geoffrey Ochieng and Sharrif Musa were the scorers for K’Ogalo, securing three vital points following a 2-1 loss to Tusker in their previous encounter.

On the other hand, Francis Baraza’s side remains unbeaten in their last seven matches and enters this clash with two consecutive wins this year.

They triumphed 1-0 over Talanta FC before narrowly overcoming Bidco United 1-0 last weekend.

This encounter marks the second meeting between the two teams this season, with the first leg in November last year seeing Gor Mahia emerge victorious 2-0, which was also the last defeat for the Abana Abeingo side.

Boniface Onyango gave K’Ogalo the lead early in the match and Bryson Wangai doubled their advantage in the dying minutes following Salim Murunga’s red card for Kakamega.

Although Gor Mahia enters the match as the favored side, both teams have not been as consistent this season compared to their performances last year after first leg matches.

Currently in fourth place with 27 points after 16 matches, Gor Mahia were leading the table with 37 points from 17 matches at this stage last season.

In contrast, Homeboyz are in 10th place with 22 points, down from their sixth-place finish last season, where they accumulated 27 points.

Zedekiah Otieno acknowledged the challenge ahead, considering the atmosphere of Kkamega Homeboyz playing in front of their home fans.

“We played well against Sofapaka, and that was the key take away from that match. Now, we are focusing on planning for the next game which will be in Kakamega, a very tough challenge,” Otieno remarked during an interview with Azam TV after the Sofapaka game.

With the match expected to be a hard-fought contest, Gor Mahia will be without several key players.

Goalkeeper Gad Mathews, who missed the Sofapaka clash, and attacking midfielder Austin Odhiambo, sidelined due to injury, will not feature.

Additionally, Bryson Wangai, who was substituted early in the Sofapaka match, remains doubtful. However, Kevin Omondi, Gedeon Bendeka, and Sharrif Musa could step up in their absence.

Francis Baraza has not reported any injuries within his squad.
