Shujaa

The men’s national rugby 7s side, Shujaa, managed to get their first win in the Perth 7s after defeating surprise packages Uruguay 19-5 in their last Pool C match on Saturday morning.

Having succumbed to defeats against New Zealand and Fiji on Friday, the Kevin Wambua-coached side finally got a win on the board with tries from Kevin Wekesa, Nygel Amaitsa and Patrick Odongo getting the job done.

However, the effort proved too little too late as the single win left Kenya bottom of Pool C, dropping them to the 9th semifinal.

Shujaa made a bright start to the match and got a reward for their dominance when Dennis Abukuse made a timely offload to the supporting Wekesa who opened the scoring after three minutes, Tony Omondi adding the extras with a successful conversion.

Amaitsa was next on the board with an unconverted try before the Strathmore Leos man set up Odongo for a beautiful third try.

Amaitsa launched a grabber kick that was well read by Odongo who got to the ball before diving over under the posts to extend Kenya’s lead to 19-0 at the break.

In the second half, only Uruguay managed a single try that was scored by Tomas Etcheverry to bring the scores to 19-5 at full time.
