Mashemeji Derby
  • The Mashemeji Derby was to be played on Sunday 24 November.
  • AFC Leopards were hoping to stage the game at Nyayo Stadium.

The highly anticipated clash between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia scheduled for Sunday 24 November 2024 will not go on as planned, SportPesa Blog can confirm.

This is after AFC Leopards could not secure a venue to host the clash categorized as a high risk match.

Leopards were hoping to secure the Nyayo National Stadium for the game, but SportPesa Blog can confirm that will not be possible.

Nyayo was closed down for renovations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 and Leopards’ hopes of securing clearance for the venue have proved futile.

“We regret to inform you that the much anticipated FKF PL match – AFC Leopards SC vs Gor Mahia FC – Mashemeji Derby earlier scheduled to be played on Sunday, 24th November 2024, 1600Hrs at Nyayo Stadium, Nairobi has been postponed to a later date.

This is due to the unavailability of the match venue, which is undergoing renovations in preparation for the upcoming CHAN 2024 Competition. We shall communicate the rescheduled dates in due course,” AFC Leopards posted on their official social media platforms.

SportPesa Blog is aware that Ingwe chairman Dan Shikanda made a request to Sports Kenya on Monday asking to use the grounds but it was declined with Nyayo being an active construction site.

Since the closing down of the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium for CHAN upgrades, teams have been forced to use the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, Dandora Stadium and even other facilities like Kinoru Stadium in Meru for hosting purposes.

However, none of the grounds meet the requirements for hosting a high-risk match like the Mashemeji Derby.
