Kenya U17

Junior Starlets head coach Mildred Cheche has divulged the reason why some of the players who took part in the recently concluded FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup are yet to return home.

The team jetted back two weeks ago from the Dominican Republic where they became the first Kenyan side to feature in the global showpiece.

The talented side finished third in their group which had eventual winners North Korea, England and Mexico.

Speaking on Monday night during an interview on NTV, Cheche disclosed that the youngsters have limited their interactions in society due to safety concerns.

“A lot of people from the community have high expectationson the girls who have been to the World Cup. Most of them might see that they have a lot of money, coming with millions, but that is not the case.

When they see you shaking hands with the President, they expect that you are coming with money. Whether you are living in Korogocho or Runda, it doesn’t really matter. So, when you look at where they are living like Korogocho, most of the time it is not safe,” she stated.

“That is why for like Susan, she has to stay away for some time, so that they can forget she lives there. After some time, she will go back. So, it is a challenge,” added the former footballer.

Cheche, who doubles up as Harambee Starlets assistant coach, further explained that some people may subject the minors to harm or even steal their possessions including mobile phones.

According to her, the safety of those who are currently in schools is guaranteed since people cannot access them.

Cheche ended by explaining some of the steps they have taken to support the teenagers to overcome the problem.

“What we mostly try to do is to talk to them, we have a good relationship with them. When they have challenges, they can call you and then advice is shared. We also talk to the parents, so it becomes easier,” she commented.
