Daniel Mateiko is brimming with confidence ahead of the 2024 Valencia Half Marathon scheduled for Sunday, October 27.

Mateiko, who Eliud Kipchoge recently backed to achieve big things in road races, heads to Spain as one of the favorite East Africans to win the coveted title.

The 26-year-old is expected to face stiff competition from the likes of compatriot Isaia Kipkoech Lasoi and the Ethiopian duo of Selemon Barega and Yomif Kejelcha.

Speaking ahead of the race, Mateiko has stated that he is ready for the battle in the city that is close to his heart.

“I think my preparation for Valencia Marathon is going on well. I am well prepared psychologically, physically and mentally.

Actually, my memories for Valencia Marathon are good. That is the place where I ran my PB (Personal Best) for the half marathon.

Valencia is a nice place, it has nice weather and I am looking forward to run my PB again in Valencia,” explained Mateiko.

The reigning Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon champion added that the Valencia marathon course is special since it has a lot of spectators.

Mateiko has featured in the World Athletics gold label event twice (2021 and 2022) where he finished third in both occasions. He set his lifetime best of 58:26 in the 2021 edition.

When asked about what drives him, the athlete who comes from a running family, mentioned two things.

“What motivates me is the dreams and goals that I have already set for myself. I have bigger dreams and goals in my running career.

The dream I have, is that I really want one day in my career feel how it feels to break limits,” he ended.
