Driftwood 7s

The 2024 Driftwood 7s reached its grand crescendo on Sunday evening with Kenya Harlequin staging an incredible 15-12 comeback win against KCB to clinch their second main cup title in the 2024 SportPesa National 7s Circuit.

The Paul Murunga-coached side displayed incredible character as they twice came from behind to seal the win that saw them stretch their lead at the top of the standings to 97 points, nine ahead of second-placed Kabras Sugar heading into the final Prinsloo 7s (14-15 September) with KCB sitting in third on 86 points.

In the match, it is KCB who hit the front through Austin Sikutwa’s unconverted attempt that gave them a 5-0 lead but Quins managed to find a response before the half time break as Leonard Fogang touched down at the corner to restore parity following a missed conversion.

KCB retook the lead in the second half through Tyson Maina’s converted strike but Amon Wamalwa’s breakaway gave Quins a lifeline with minutes left.

At first, it looked as though Quins had missed a golden chance to at least level the scores when Lucky Dewald missed the conversion right in front of the posts forcing the current log leaders to look for another try as they trailed 12-10.

Dewald managed to atone for that moment when he offloaded the ball to Brian Ratila whose desire could not be stopped as he touched down at the corner with the very last action in the second half to win the game for his side.

The win now means Quins have won two main cup titles (Ingo 7s, Driftwood 7s) alongside Kabras Sugar (Christie 7s, Dala 7s) with KCB the only other side to taste victory ( Kabeberi 7s).

The 2024 SportPesa National 7s Circuit now heads to Nakuru for the Prinsloo 7s where the overall winner will be crowned.
