It is finally time for Kenya Premier League action to resume after the Ministry of Health and Football Kenya Federation gave the go-ahead last week.
Kenya’s top flight resumes this weekend and there is no better way to welcome back the league than with top of the table action as the brewers host KCB FC.
Neither team has taken to the field since early March when sports in the country was halted due to the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic.
“In consultation with the Ministry of Sports, we wish to inform you FKF plans to kick off the Premier League on May 15, under strict observance of existing government Covid-19 protocols and the FKF/CAF Covid-19 competition protocols.
“Consequently, we wish to inform you that in accordance with the Ministry of Health and FKF Covid-19 protocols, all premier league clubs must be tested for Covid-19 before the aforementioned planned league kick-off date,” read part of a statement signed by FKF CEO Barry Otieno.
Robert Matano’s Tusker FC are currently at the top of the standings with 36 points after 16 matches, six ahead of second place KCB who have played one less game.
Rearranged fixture
The two will square up behind closed doors on Saturday at the Ruaraka Stadium as they try to fend off third place AFC Leopards SC, who will host Nzoia Sugar FC later in the day.
The first game of the weekend will be played on Friday afternoon at the Kasarani Stadium as fourth-place Kariobangi Sharks FC host Kakamega Homeboyz at 3pm.
Homeboyz who are in eighth place with 21 points can leapfrog champions Gor Mahia FC if they are victorious on Friday.
Gor have had a rough season thus far, already losing six of the 14 matches they have played – leaving them in 7th place, 14 points off the top.
They host newcomers Nairobi City Stars on Sunday.
Mathare United, are bottom of the KPL table following the expulsion of Zoo for match-fixing, and will play lowly Vihiga United on Sunday as well.
The only other match scheduled for the day is a rearranged fixture from the third round of the 2020/21 league as Sofapaka host Wazito FC.
