Rooney Onyango opens Sogndal account in crucial win over Raufoss

Rooney Onyango

Harambee Stars right-back Rooney Onyango scored his first goal for Sogndal as the Norwegian side secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Raufoss at Fosshaugane Campus, a result that lifted them out of the relegation zone.

Onyango found the back of the net in the 57th minute to put Sogndal ahead after a promising attacking move, with Kasper Skaanes providing the assist.

The Kenyan defender’s goal proved important in a closely contested encounter as Sogndal fought for three valuable points in their battle to remain in the division.

The hosts had created several opportunities in the first half but failed to make them count. Vegard Hagen came close after 11 minutes, while Harald Woxen struck the post towards the end of the opening period as the teams went into the break level at 0-0.

Sogndal returned from the interval with renewed purpose and eventually broke the deadlock through Onyango, who finished off a well-worked move to register his maiden goal for the club.

However, their advantage lasted only 16 minutes. Adrian Rogulj restored parity for Raufoss in the 73rd minute with a well-struck effort from around 17 metres, setting up a tense finish.

Sogndal responded almost immediately, with KP Arierhi scoring in the 79th minute to restore the home side’s lead and ultimately secure the victory.

The hosts had opportunities to extend their advantage late in the game, but the Raufoss goalkeeper produced important saves to keep the scoreline respectable.

Sogndal held on until the final whistle to claim a much-needed win on home soil, with Onyango’s contribution helping them secure three points that could prove vital in their fight against relegation.

The result also provides a timely boost for the Kenyan international, who continues to gain experience in Norwegian football as he looks to strengthen his position at club level and remain in contention for Harambee Stars selection.

Sogndal will now turn their attention to their next home fixture against Kongsvinger on Sunday, October 25, as they look to build on the important victory.
