- A brace from Adrian Khwesa and a try from Daniel Wafula help Kabras Sugar RFC win Kampala 7s.
- Heathens had beaten Kabras 10-5 in their pool match on Saturday.
Kabras Sugar RFC have been crowned champions of the 2026 Kampala 7s after defeating Uganda’s Heathens 17-12 in a closely contested final at Kings Park Arena on Sunday.
The Kenyan side produced a determined performance to claim the second edition of the tournament, a year after Emerging Uganda Cranes lifted the inaugural title.
For Kabras, the victory was even more satisfying after Heathens had beaten them 10-5 in their pool match on Saturday. The Sugarmen returned a day later with a much-improved display to settle the score when it mattered most.

Kabras Sugar RFC win Kampala 7s
Kabras made a confident start to the final and opened the scoring through Daniel Wafula. The former Butula Boys scrum-half showed impressive pace after breaking away from a scrum before racing through the Heathens defence to score.
Heathens quickly responded and turned the game around with a converted try, leaving Kabras trailing 7-5.
The Sugarmen refused to panic and regained control through Adrian Khwesa, who finished well in the corner to put his side back in front at 12-7.
Heathens continued to push and eventually levelled the contest at 12-12, setting up a tense finish with the title still within reach of either side.
With the clock running down, Khwesa stepped up once again.
The speedster put in a clever kick behind the Heathens defensive line, chased it down himself and managed to beat the defenders to the ball before grounding it for his second try of the match.
The score gave Kabras a 17-12 advantage, and they managed the remaining minutes well to secure the victory and lift the Kampala 7s trophy.

Their route to the final had also been impressive.
After suffering defeat to Heathens in their opening pool encounter, Kabras responded emphatically by thrashing Kyadondo Select 49-0 before recording a 22-7 victory over Rams.
They carried that momentum into the knockout stage, where they dispatched Toyota Buffaloes 25-5 in the semi-final to set up another meeting with Heathens.
The championship is particularly significant given the composition of the Kabras squad. Player-coach Ntabeni Dukisa travelled to Kampala without several of the club’s established 7s players, forcing the team to rely heavily on emerging players and those who primarily feature in 15s rugby.
Several senior players were unavailable because of other national and international commitments. Kevin Wekesa was taking part in the Ultimate 7s, while Mike Lukusi and Jackson Siketi were with Shujaa preparing for the Safari 7s.
Ray Ambale, Brian Mutua and Patrick Sabatia were in Mauritius with the Kenya Morans for the Africa 7s, while former Kabras player Brian Tanga retired.

Despite the absences, the available senior players provided important experience. Ronald Wangila and Adrian Khwesa were among those with regular sevens exposure courtesy of the SportPesa National 7s Circuit, while Eric Cantona, James Olela, Roy Maruti, Victor Otieno and Chrispine Otieno brought their experience from 15s rugby.
Khwesa proved particularly influential in the final, scoring twice, including the decisive try that handed Kabras the championship.
The tournament also offered valuable exposure to a number of young players, including Matrix Matangi, who completed his studies at Kisii School last year and Wafula who graduated from Butula Boys in 2025.
For Kabras, the Kampala 7s triumph is another indication of the strength of their player development system and the depth within the club. Even without many of their regular 7s stars, the Sugarmen were able to put together a competitive side capable of overcoming some of Uganda’s leading clubs.
