Harambee Stars forward Henry Meja has officially parted ways with Swedish top-flight side AIK Fotboll following the expiration of his contract, five years after joining the club from Sportpesa League side Tusker FC.
The 24-year-old striker leaves the Solna-based outfit as a free agent after his five-year agreement, which was initially signed in September 2021, came to an end on September 1, 2026.
Meja arrived in Sweden with high expectations after a stellar breakout campaign in Kenya, where his 11 league goals helped Tusker FC secure the 2020/21 FKF Premier League title winning the Young Player of the year award.
He made an immediate impact on his debut for AIK in February 2022, coming off the bench to score in a 4-0 Svenska Cupen victory against Eskilsminne IF.

However, first-team opportunities at Strawberry Arena proved limited over the course of his tenure, with the Kenyan international making just six competitive appearances in total for the club’s senior side.
To gain regular playing time, the former Green Commandos marksman spent loan spells in the lower Swedish tiers, including a stint with Norrby IF in 2023 and two seasons with Superettan side AFC Eskilstuna, where he made 55 competitive appearances.
In an official club statement released by the club on Monday, AIK Fotboll confirmed that the forward is departing following the conclusion of his contract, stating,
“Henry ‘Meja’ Atola leaves AIK Fotboll after his contract expired on September 1, 2026. Henry joined the club in the summer of 2021 and played a total of six competitive matches in the black-and-yellow shirt.”
Having closed his chapter in Scandinavia, the Kakamega-born attacker now enters the market as a free agent looking for his next career step.
His departure marks the end of a challenging spell in Europe, but the former Tusker talisman remains a promising talent eligible to rebuild his club career and earn a recall to the Kenyan national team setup ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
