• Here is the Tottenham Hotspur vs Charlton Athletic prediction for the 2026/27 EFL Cup as both sides battle for a place in the third round.
  • The two teams will meet on Wednesday, August 26, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
  • Kick-off is set for 9:45pm EAT.

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to put their disappointing Premier League opener behind them when they welcome Championship side Charlton Athletic in the second round of the EFL Cup.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat away to Brentford at the weekend, a result that exposed some of the weaknesses still present in a Tottenham squad that has undergone significant changes during the summer.

Spurs have spent heavily in an attempt to rebuild the team, but the opening-day performance showed that De Zerbi still has plenty of work to do. The Italian admitted after the Brentford defeat that his squad are “not a team yet”, adding that his players “didn’t fight the right way”.

The EFL Cup therefore offers Tottenham an immediate opportunity to respond, particularly in front of their home supporters.

Tottenham have a strong record against Charlton and have won each of their last five meetings across all competitions, scoring 16 goals in the process.

The North London club, however, have not enjoyed a particularly successful recent history in this competition. Their last EFL Cup triumph came in 2008, while they have failed to reach the fourth round on several occasions since then.

What time does Tottenham Hotspur vs Charlton Athletic kick off?

Tottenham Hotspur will face Charlton Athletic on Wednesday, August 26, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 9:45pm East Africa Time (EAT).

Tottenham Hotspur vs Charlton Athletic team news

Tottenham will have to cope without several players through injury.

Xavi Simons, Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odobert are all sidelined with knee problems, while Mohammed Kudus is unavailable due to a thigh injury.

James Maddison is also expected to miss the game after suffering a shoulder injury during the defeat to Brentford.

There is some positive news, however, with Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro expected to feature from the bench after missing the weekend defeat.

New signing Savinho is available and could make his Tottenham debut, while Mateus Fernandes, Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Bergvall are all in contention for places in midfield.

Dominic Solanke could also return to the starting XI, with De Zerbi likely to rotate his squad ahead of Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Newcastle.

Charlton, meanwhile, head into the match with plenty of confidence after making a perfect start to their Championship campaign.

The Addicks have injury concerns of their own, with Matt Godden, Will Mannion and Kayne Ramsay remaining sidelined.

Charlie Kelman and Josh Edwards have returned to training and will be assessed before kick-off.

Kenyan midfielder Timothy Ouma could be made to wait for his Charlton debut after joining the club on loan from Slavia Prague. The youngster has been building his fitness with the Under-21 side.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Charlton Athletic predicted lineups

Tottenham Hotspur vs Charlton Athletic head-to-head

Tottenham have dominated the recent meetings between the two sides, winning their last five encounters in all competitions.

During that run, Spurs have scored 16 goals and conceded just four.

Charlton’s last victory over Tottenham came in November 2004, when Alan Curbishley’s side secured a memorable 3-2 Premier League win in North London.

The Addicks will therefore have history against them as they attempt to produce another upset.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Charlton Athletic prediction

Charlton arrive in North London with genuine momentum after winning their opening two Championship matches, including an impressive 2-1 victory over West Ham United at the London Stadium.

They also defeated Cheltenham Town 3-1 in the first round of the EFL Cup, showing they have the attacking threat to trouble Tottenham if given opportunities.

However, Spurs should have too much quality, particularly with several first-team players expected to return and Savinho potentially making his debut.

Tottenham’s defensive problems make a clean sheet difficult to predict, but playing at home should give De Zerbi’s side the edge.

Tottenham should eventually get the job done, although Charlton’s excellent early-season form could make this a much closer contest than the gap between the two divisions suggests.
