The race for a coveted place in the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League league phase intensified this week as the third qualifying round first-leg matches produced late drama, stunning comebacks and dominant victories across Europe.
With only the play-off round standing between the remaining clubs and the lucrative league phase, the stakes could hardly be higher.
The standout story on Tuesday came in Sofia, where Bulgarian giants Levski Sofia secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Kazakhstan champions Kairat Almaty courtesy of a stoppage-time strike from Serginho.
Levski completely dictated proceedings, enjoying 71 percent possession and restricting Kairat to no attempts on goal throughout the 90 minutes.

However, despite creating numerous openings, the breakthrough appeared elusive until Serginho unleashed a superb long-range effort that beat the goalkeeper and sparked wild celebrations among the home supporters.
The result gives the Bulgarians a slender advantage heading into the return leg in Almaty, where Kairat will be banking on their impressive home record in European qualifiers to overturn the deficit.
Another dramatic finish unfolded in Sweden as Slovak champions Slovan Bratislava fought back to defeat Mjällby 2-1 away from home.
After falling behind from the penalty spot just after the hour mark, Slovan maintained their attacking momentum before scoring twice, with Manasse Kianga netting a dramatic 94th-minute winner to hand his side a valuable advantage ahead of the return fixture.
Croatian powerhouse GNK Dinamo Zagreb produced arguably the performance of the round after dismantling Lithuania’s Kauno Žalgiris 5-0.
Dinamo were clinical in the final third, moving the ball with pace and precision while exposing the visitors’ defensive frailties. Barring an extraordinary turnaround in Lithuania, the Croatian champions already have one foot in the play-off round.
Ararat-Armenia also boosted their qualification hopes with a spirited 2-1 comeback victory over Slovenia’s Celje. Having conceded first, the hosts remained patient in possession before turning the contest around with two well-worked goals to take a narrow lead into next week’s decisive second leg.
Israeli side Hapoel Be’er Sheva earned one of the most disciplined victories of the round after edging Serbian champions Crvena Zvezda 1-0. Despite being reduced to ten men for the final half-hour, Hapoel defended resolutely, frustrating the visitors and taking a priceless advantage to Belgrade.
The League Path produced arguably the most entertaining fixture of the round as Union Saint-Gilloise and Norwegian champions Bodø/Glimt played out a pulsating 3-3 draw in Belgium.
The visitors twice went ahead before Union fought back on each occasion through Raul Florucz. Substitute Promise David looked to have completed the comeback with an 88th-minute strike, but Bodø/Glimt refused to surrender and snatched a dramatic equaliser three minutes later through Odin Lurås Bjørtuft, leaving the tie delicately balanced.
Czech champions Sparta Praha also made headlines after producing an impressive second-half comeback to beat French giants Lyon 2-1. Lyon had taken the lead through an own goal shortly before half-time, but Sparta responded with two goals in six minutes to secure a famous victory and end a poor run against the Ligue 1 side.
In Piraeus, Olympiacos and Dutch side NEC Nijmegen failed to find the breakthrough in a tightly contested 0-0 draw. While chances came at both ends, neither side managed to apply the finishing touch, ensuring the return leg in the Netherlands remains one of the most evenly poised ties of the round.
Wednesday’s action wrapped up with Danish outfit Aarhus edging Azerbaijan’s Sabah 2-1 to carry a narrow advantage into the second leg, while Turkish giants Fenerbahçe took a significant step towards the play-offs with an accomplished 2-0 victory over Austrian champions Sturm Graz.
With qualification for the play-off round at stake, next week’s return fixtures promise another round of high-intensity football as clubs fight to keep alive their ambitions of reaching Europe’s premier club competition.
