Brazilian football is preparing for a new chapter after head coach Carlo Ancelotti officially confirmed that three of the country’s most influential players : Neymar, Casemiro and Danilo have brought their international careers to an end following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The announcement comes just weeks after Brazil suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16, their earliest World Cup exit since Italia ’90 when Argentina eliminated them at the same stage.
For a nation synonymous with World Cup success, the defeat marked the end of a disappointing campaign and has now triggered what Ancelotti describes as a necessary generational transition.
Speaking to Brazilian outlet Globo, the veteran Italian tactician admitted that the tournament had signaled the closing chapter for some of Brazil’s modern greats.
“I think that this World Cup brings a generation of very important players to an end,” Ancelotti said. “Starting with Neymar, also Danilo and Casemiro, all of these players who were over 30 at the World Cup.”
The former Real Madrid manager made it clear that his focus has already shifted towards building a younger squad capable of competing for future honours.
“We are going to look at new players who can come in. I won’t say specifically for the World Cup in 2030, but who can already be competitive for our first objective, which is the Copa America in 2028.”
The trio leave behind remarkable international careers that have defined Brazilian football over the past decade.
Neymar bows out as one of the greatest players ever to wear the famous yellow jersey. Across 130 international appearances, the gifted forward produced countless memorable performances, dazzling fans with his creativity, flair and eye for goal.

Following Brazil’s World Cup exit, Neymar himself confirmed that he had already reached his decision.
“I think my time with the national team has already passed. I made history there, and I’m very happy about it,” Neymar said after Santos’ victory over Universidad Central.

“I experienced a lot there, gave my blood and my life, and always fought and battled for the yellow jersey. But I don’t think I want anymore.”

Despite the significant departures, Ancelotti insists Brazil’s rebuilding process will not mean starting from scratch. Experienced figures will remain within the squad to guide the next generation.
“I’m not going to say that I’m going to change the entire 26. We are going to keep some important players who can continue with our work, like Marquinhos,” Ancelotti explained.
“I think it is important that players like him stay on to give a sign of continuity in our work. But the idea is for change and to bring about a new generation.”
