Faith Kipyegon will be looking to bounce back tonight at the Stade Louis II in Monaco, as Team Kenya spearheads an aggressive onslaught at the Monaco Diamond League, the tenth stop of the 2026 Diamond League circuit.
The greatest female middle-distance runner of all time finds herself in a position of rare vulnerability, with the three-time Olympic champion returning to the very track where she shattered the mile world record in 2023.
Kipyegon’s 2026 season took a sharp, unexpected turn last weekend at the Prefontaine Classic. In a stunning upset, the 32-year-old middle-distance queen finished a rare third in the mile, marking her first track defeat in four years.

Speaking at the pre-race press conference in Monaco, a remarkably calm Kipyegon shed light on the reality behind the scenes, revealing she has been locked in a battle with a hamstring injury since her season-opening 5000m victory in Shanghai.
“Losing is part of the game. You can’t be a winner every time, but people don’t understand what we go through behind the scenes—the training, the hard work, the injury, everything. It’s not easy competing when you’re only at 98 percent.
To race against the best in the world, you really need to be at 100 percent.” Instead of going home to rest, she decided to stay and run tonight to regain her confidence before the world championships later this year.”
The list of athletes she is running against tonight is full of world-class champions. Her biggest challenge comes from a powerful group of Ethiopian runners, including Freweyni Hailu, Senayet Getachew, and Aleshign Baweke, who are all experts at this longer distance.
She will also face Japan’s Nozomi Tanaka and France’s triathlon star Cassandre Beaugrand, with Italy’s European champion Nadia Battocletti also in the mix.

While Kipyegon’s comeback is the biggest story of the night, she is also inspiring the rest of the Kenyan team.
Another young Kenyan star, Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi, is also trying something new by running a rare 1000-meter race against his biggest rival from Algeria.
Wanyonyi, who is the world number one in the 800-meter race, is temporarily leaving his favorite event to test his speed in this slightly longer race against Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati.
Even though he has had a great season, he is still searching for his first Diamond League victory of the year after finishing a close second at earlier races in Rabat and Oslo.
