• Here is the 2026 British Grand Prix preview, current standings, schedule, and where to watch all the action on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Lewis Hamilton managed to secure Sprint pole position during Friday’s qualifying session at Silverstone.
  • Coming into the weekend after a far-from-ideal outing in Austria, Hamilton trails championship leader Kimi Antonelli by 46 points.

Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton claimed pole position in Sprint Qualifying ahead of this weekend’s British Grand Prix after snatching top spot on home soil by a mere 0.011s from Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli.

Hamilton, a record nine-time winner of his home race, set the pace throughout Sprint Qualifying at Silverstone on Friday.

He topped Free Practice before leading both earlier qualifying segments ahead of a one-lap shootout in SQ3.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was third fastest, 0.321s off the pace.

Mercedes’ George Russell, who trails Antonelli by 40 points in the championship, endured a disappointing session, finishing fifth behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

McLaren’s Lando Norris, the reigning world champion and last year’s British Grand Prix winner, was sixth fastest ahead of team-mate Oscar Piastri.

Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar and the Racing Bulls duo of Liam Lawson and British rookie Arvid Lindblad rounded out the top 10.

While Hamilton remains realistic about the straight-line speed advantage held by his former team, Mercedes, his aggressive late-braking style has unlocked the full potential of the nimble Ferrari SF-26.

With a packed Sprint schedule raising the stakes, the stage is set for a thrilling showdown against Antonelli,Russell, and a resurgent Verstappen.

Whether Ferrari can maintain that momentum over the remaining sessions remains to be seen, but Hamilton has shown that his pursuit of an unprecedented eighth world title is very much alive.

Championship standings ahead of British Grand Prix

Coming into the weekend after a far-from-ideal outing in Austria, Hamilton trails championship leader Kimi Antonelli by 46 points.

Sitting third in the Drivers’ Standings with 125 points, the Ferrari driver remains within striking distance of the championship lead.

George Russell occupies second place with 131 points, meaning a standout home weekend for Hamilton could significantly reshape the title battle.

A maximum of 34 points is available across Saturday’s Sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix.

If Hamilton converts his Sprint pole into an eight-point victory before winning Sunday’s race with the fastest lap, he could climb to 159 points.

With Antonelli leading the standings on 171 points and starting alongside Hamilton on the front row, while Russell lines up fifth on 131 points, a flawless weekend would dramatically reduce Antonelli’s advantage and could propel Hamilton into second place in the championship.

That points scenario transforms his pursuit of an eighth world title from an emotional ambition into a genuine mathematical possibility.

Cutting the deficit to fewer than 20 points before the summer break would heap significant psychological pressure on the rookie championship leader.

For Ferrari, a maximum-scoring weekend would also trim their 98-point deficit to Mercedes in the Constructors’ Championship, setting up a fascinating 2026 title fight.
