Five-time world champions Brazil kick off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a thrilling fixture when they will be taking on Africa’s giants Morocco on Sunday midnight at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The Carlos Ancelotti men are the favorites and dark horses in this Group C, with Morocco being the main challengers considering they are the top African side with some solid experience.

Brazil are the only team in history to feature in every edition since the competition’s inception in 1930, and their five triumphs are the most of any nation.

However, with their last success coming in 2002, they are on their joint-longest drought without lifting the trophy.

The Selecao head to North America with one aim this time round: to avenge the quarterfinal elimination in the 2022 edition in Qatar, where they were knocked out by Croatia.

Meanwhile, Morocco are gearing up for their seventh appearance on the grandest international stage of all. They are regarded by many as one of the tournament’s premier dark horses to engineer another deep run.

Morocco’s first three World Cup appearances occurred in Mexico (1970 and 1986) and the United States (1994) – two of this summer’s three co-hosts – where they suffered a debut group-stage exit, staged a memorable run to the last 16 in 1986, and endured a disappointing three-loss campaign on American soil.

The Atlas Lions have developed into a powerful footballing nation in recent years, recording 33 wins, 10 draws and just two defeats in 45 games since the start of 2023, and they are currently ranked seventh in the world above the likes of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.

For the Atlas Lions, centre-back Nayef Aguerd (groin) and winger Abde Ezzalzouli (knee) will both miss the World Cup due to injury. Ezzalzouli sustained his issue in the friendly draw with Norway, and Noussair Mazraoui was forced off in the same game with a shoulder problem.

Brazil’s all-time top scorer Neymar is still recovering from a grade two calf injury and is not expected to be ready for Sunday’s game, while right-back Wesley has been ruled out of the World Cup with a muscle injury sustained in the friendly win over Egypt.

Ederson was a late call-up to the squad and he is believed to have been tested in the right-back role in training. Danilo and Roger Ibanez are two other right-sided defenders at Ancelotti’s disposal.

Brazil vs Morocco head-to-head record and recent meetings

This will be just the second encounter between Brazil and Morocco at the World Cup, with the previous clash coming in the 1998 group stage match.

That fixture featured the reigning champions, led by the formidable trio of Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Bebeto, who dashed Morocco’s hopes and secured a comfortable 3-0 win in Nantes.

Their only game since then was a friendly in Tunisia in March 2023, with Morocco running out 2-1 winners thanks to strikes from Sofiane Boufal and Abdelhamid Sabiri.

Brazil vs Morocco prediction and betting tips

Brazil have won seven of their eight World Cup matches against African opposition. The sole exception was a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in 2022.

Morocco have never won their opening match at the FIFA World Cup, nor faced South American opposition in those games.

The last time they met a side from that continent at the global showpiece was in 1998 – against none other than Brazil.

Brazil come into this clash as the favorites to win considering their squad depth, and they will be looking to assert their dominance in the group stage aiming to progress further, but they cannot rule out Morocco’s danger, who can absolutely shock them and also grab the victory.

We expect both sides, as they have quality strikers, so we might see goals in this encounter.
