Reigning Olympic and World 800 meter champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi has opened up about the deep personal family milestone that prompted his sudden withdrawal from the Stockholm Diamond League over the weekend.

Addressing journalists at a press conference in Norway, the 21-year-old Kenyan middle-distance runner radiated joy as he revealed that his absence from the Swedish capital was down to a life-changing event.

Following a second-place finish behind Britain’s Max Burgin at the Rabat Diamond League on May 31, Wanyonyi was locked in to travel straight to Sweden for the fifth leg of the series.

However, the track star completely tore up his travel itinerary after receiving word that his partner, fellow Kenyan Olympian and 1500m specialist Nelly Chepchirchir, had gone into labor.

Wanyonyi immediately dashed back home to Kenya to be by her side, successfully arriving in time to witness the birth of their newborn daughter, Noellah, who made her grand entrance on June 4,coincidentally sharing the exact same day as her mother’s birthday.

Reflecting on his decision to prioritize family responsibilities over elite competition, the soft-spoken champion admitted that his perspective on both life and racing has completely transformed.

“I was supposed to run the Stockholm Diamond League, but I went home after the Rabat Diamond League. My wife delivered our firstborn, and I am so happy,” Wanyonyi explained with a beaming smile.

“It feels different to be a dad. It’s very special, and I now have a new motivation whenever I run.”

Having safely settled his young family back at home, the global 800m king quickly turned his focus back to the track, flying out to defend his title at the Oslo Bislett Games.

Running with the fresh perspective of a new father, Wanyonyi locked horns in an absolute thriller against American teen sensation Cooper Lutkenhaus, ultimately crossing the line in 1:42.09 to take second place by a mere hundredth of a second.

Though he narrowly missed out on the top spot in Oslo, Wanyonyi remains incredibly energized for the rest of the 2026 outdoor season, firmly stating that his heart and legs are now fueled by a completely new purpose whenever he steps onto the starting line.

Wanyonyi will return home to Kenya for a brief, well-deserved break to spend precious time with his newborn daughter and partner before heading out to resume his international campaign. Once his brief family hiatus concludes, his primary focus will shift entirely to the Monaco Diamond League scheduled for Friday, July 10.
