Shakira, Madonna & BTS set to light up historic FIFA World Cup Final halftime show

For decades, the FIFA World Cup final has been defined by tension, drama and unforgettable football moments.

From Andrés Iniesta’s extra-time winner in 2010 to Messi’s emotional triumph in Qatar with Argentina four years ago, the final has always belonged to the game itself. But in 2026, FIFA is preparing to add a completely new layer to football’s grandest occasion.

Global music icons Shakira, Madonna and K-pop sensation BTS are set to headline the first-ever halftime show during a FIFA World Cup final.

The groundbreaking entertainment spectacle will take place on July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium during the final match of the expanded 48-team tournament.

FIFA confirmed the news through a social media announcement on Thursday, officially ushering football into a new entertainment era similar to the iconic halftime productions seen at the Super Bowl.

The show will be curated by Chris Martin and produced in partnership with Global Citizen. Beyond the glamour and star power, FIFA says the performance will carry a deeper purpose through the newly launched FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund.

A promotional video released alongside the announcement featured Chris Martin alongside beloved Sesame Street and Muppets characters, with BTS also making a surprise cameo appearance, adding excitement among football and music fans worldwide.

In a statement accompanying the announcement, FIFA highlighted the humanitarian mission behind the historic halftime production.

“A FIFA World Cup first, the Halftime Show supports the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, a landmark initiative working to raise $100 million (Sh12.9 billion) to expand access to quality education and football for children around the world,” said FIFA.

According to football’s world governing body, part of the fund will come directly from ticket sales throughout the tournament.

“Throughout the tournament, $1 from every ticket sold to FIFA World Cup 2026 matches will be donated to the Fund,” FIFA added.

The 2026 tournament itself is already shaping up to be unlike any other in history. Hosted jointly by United States, Mexico and Canada, it will become the first World Cup staged across three nations.

It will also be the largest edition ever, featuring 48 teams instead of the traditional 32. The expanded format will see teams divided into 12 groups of four, with the addition of a round of 32 in the knockout stages. The competition will run for a record 39 days, beginning on June 11 in Mexico City before concluding in New Jersey.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino had first hinted at the halftime show concept last year, describing it as a milestone moment for the competition as FIFA seeks to broaden the tournament’s global entertainment appeal.

Still, questions remain over how the performance will fit into football’s traditional match structure. FIFA regulations currently limit halftime intervals to 15 minutes, and organisers are yet to explain whether the break will be extended to accommodate the show.

Regardless of how the logistics are handled, the announcement has already generated massive excitement across the sporting and entertainment worlds. With Shakira whose World Cup songs have become part of football culture , Madonna’s global influence and BTS’ enormous international fanbase, the 2026 final is expected to attract unprecedented worldwide attention both on and off the pitch.
