Despite Barcelona being crowned champions, there is plenty of midweek La Liga action to look forward to as we enter round 36 of the 2025/26 season.

Barca beat Real Madrid 2-0 over the weekend to be crowned the 2025/26 champions. This marked the first time the Blaugrana have won the title in an El Clasico match.

The victory opened up a 14-point gap between them and second place Madrid. Villarreal are in third with 69 points, needing one win to guarantee a top three finish and a spot in next season’s Champions League.

The battle to avoid relegation is also at its peak with two more teams set to join Real Oviedo in the second division next season. Alaves and Girona currently occupy the remaining two drop spots with two games remaining.

Here we have a look at some of the games lined up in midweek and offer our predicted outcome.

Espanyol vs Athletic Bilbao – Wednesday, 8PM – RCDE Stadium

The hosts come into the game in 17th place with 39 points, desperate for a win after a horrible run of form. Espanyol have not won a game this year, an 18-game winless run.

They face ninth place Bilbao who have 44 points after 35 games. They’re coming off a shock 1-0 home defeat to Valencia, a third loss in their last five league games.

Espanyol on the other hand are coming from back-to-back defeats to Real Madrid and Sevilla. They however won 2-1 away from home the last time these two sides met last December.

With all that is at stake, we can expect a rather cagey encounter with few goals scored. A draw is a very likely outcome in this match.

Villarreal vs Sevilla – Wednesday, 8PM – Estadio de la Ceramica

The yellow submarine have already secured a place in next season’s Champions League but need a win to cement their third place on the log. They are full of confidence on the back of a five-game unbeaten run.

Villarreal were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw against Mallorca in their last game. Meanwhile, Sevilla were 2-1 winners in their derby against Espanyol to make it two consecutive league wins for the first time this year.

The pair of wins lifted Sevilla out of the relegation zone into 13th place with 40 points. They are seeking three straight La Liga wins for the first time this season.

Villarreal are hoping they can complete the double over their opponents after a 2-1 win last September.

Alaves vs Barcelona – Wednesday, 10:30PM – Estadio Mendizorrotza

Alaves are desperate for a result that will lift them out of the dreaded relegation zone. They are currently in 19th with 37 points, with only one win in their last five matches.

They take on champions Barcelona who are just looking to improve their tally at this point. Barca have won their last six games in all competitions – scoring 13 goals in the process.

Alaves are coming off a hard fought 1-1 draw away at Elche and a win here could see them move a few spots up the log, depending on other results across Spain.

Barca have won the last six games they have played against Alaves, with a 1-1 draw being the hosts best result against the champions since 2016.

Real Madrid vs Oviedo – Thursday, 10:30PM – Santiago Bernabeau

After conceding the title fight to Barca in a 2-0 defeat over the weekend, Los Blancos will just be looking to finish the season in good form. A record of 25 wins from 35 games was far from good enough this season as they trail Barca by 14 points.

Following their humiliating exit from the Champions League after a 6-4 aggregate loss to Bayern Munich, Alvaro Arbeloa will finish his maiden season without silverware.

They take on an already relegated Oviedo who were making a return to La Liga after 24 years. The visitors only managed six wins all season and will be playing in the second tier of Spanish football next season.

With only pride left to play for, it’s doubtful that Oviedo will cause any trouble for the hosts here.
