AFC Leopards captain & assistant upbeat ahead of Mashemeji Derby

Speaking to the press on Saturday morning ahead of Sunday’s clash, Omune stated that this edition of the Derby will be a whole different beast from the others, given how much is on the line.

He believes they truly deserve the three points because they have put in the work to get where they are.

“This time is different. There’s a lot at stake, and the way we’ve prepared mentally as a team has been solid. We believe we deserve to win this match because we’ve worked really hard to get here, and we’re fully ready. It’s a big game and one we must win to stay aligned with our mission this season,” Omune explained.

The Fred Ambani charges will be at home, currently sitting second on the table with 55 points, just three behind leaders Gor Mahia, who have 58.

Rachier questions officiating decisions before crucial Mashemeji Derby

Omune believes they are more than prepared for the encounter and are fired up, with their sole aim being to bounce back from their recent stumble.

“We are motivated. We have been performing well this season and we understand what needs to be done in this match tomorrow. We know we won last time, and they won’t be easy to break down. It won’t be a walkover, but we’re hoping for the three points.”

Ingwe’s most recent outing ended in disappointment as their title charge took a hit following a rough 3-0 defeat to Kenya Police last weekend at Nyayo Stadium.

As for Kayci, who makes a return from injury, he believes they need to rebound from that setback and he says doing it in the Derby would be the sweetest thing.

“As much as we lost our last match, the morale is still high among the fans. I don’t think it was a major setback. But bouncing back is our main target on Sunday, and there’s nothing better than doing that in a derby. That’s exactly what we’re aiming for, especially with so much at stake in the title race,” Odhiambo stated.

A win for AFC Leopards on Sunday would see them draw level on points with Gor Mahia, while a victory for the Charles Akonnor-led men would stretch their advantage to six points with five games left meaning both sides know exactly what’s on the line in this showdown.
