Mara Sugar turned a set piece into an all-important goal as they managed to edge out Tusker FC 0-1 in the SportPesa League Round 29 clash played on Friday afternoon at the Police Sacco Stadium.
It was David Omondi who came off the bench and sealed the win for the Sugar Millers in a match that had been a cagey, goalless affair before he coolly found the net from a free kick in the 88th minute.
This result means the Brewers have only secured one victory in their last four outings, suffering three defeats and a draw, a run that has left them in seventh place with 41 points.

On top of that, it marks the fourth loss under Frenchman Julien Mette since he took over back in February, and he has gathered just 13 points from a possible 27 (4 wins, 4 losses, 1 draw).
For Mara, the ninth win of the season lifts them just one spot below Tusker in eighth place with 40 points with three crucial points that could prove vital for the Sugar Millers’ survival as they chase a third season in the top flight since promotion.
It was the hosts who dominated the opening minutes, and just four minutes in, they had a chance to take the lead after Chrispine Erambo’s shot was parried away by Mara keeper Joseph Ogenda for a corner.
The set piece was delivered well inside the box, only for Eugene Ikutwa’s low effort to drift just wide.
Tusker had a golden opportunity to take control in the first half, and they crafted another chance in the final minutes, but Ogenda again denied Erambo’s strike as both sides continued to search for the back of the net.
Mara then linked up nicely as Ian Imbusia calmly found Timothy Ndayala outside the box. Ndayala tried a shot that just flew off target, and both teams went into the break locked in a tense, goalless stalemate.
Tukser came out after halftime with urgent intent and created an opening ten minutes later through Ian Simiyu, who just could not get his footing right as they failed to grab the lead.
A well-worked move from Francis Xavier’s boys saw them fashion another chance: Jimmy Owili swung in a dangerous corner, Kelvin Mwavali rose highest and powered a header that crashed against the crossbar and bounced back into play a massive missed opportunity to go ahead.
Then came Omondi. Introduced in the 80th minute, he managed to make all the difference as his side snatched all three points on the road.
