The men’s national football team, Harambee Stars, have risen in the latest FIFA rankings following their performance at the FIFA Series 2026 tournament that took place from 27-30 March in Kigali, Rwanda.

Kenya’s commanding 3-0 victory over Grenada has seen the national team rise in the global standings, moving ahead of regional rivals Tanzania in a positive development for head coach Benni McCarthy and his squad.

Harambee Stars wrapped up their FIFA Series campaign in style on Monday with a comfortable win over the Caribbean outfit, thanks to well-taken goals from Austine Odhiambo, Ryan Ogam and Zech Obiero.

The victory secured a third-place finish in the four-team tournament and ended Kenya’s four-match winless run, giving the team a much-needed confidence boost as they continue building towards the 2027 AFCON tournament.

Kenya had earlier faced Estonia in their opening match, where they settled for a 1-1 draw in regular time before narrowly losing 5-4 in a post-match penalty shootout.

Despite the defeat, the result had minimal impact on their ranking, as the team only dropped 0.54 points. The emphatic win over Grenada, however, added 3.23 points to Kenya’s total, pushing their tally to 1,182.23 points in the latest FIFA update.

The improvement has seen Harambee Stars move up two places to position 111 in the world, up from 113 prior to the tournament.

Elsewhere in the tournament, Rwanda emerged as winners after defeating Estonia 2-0 in the final, a result that saw them move up to position 128 in the world rankings. Estonia remained in position 129, while Grenada climbed slightly to position 163 despite suffering heavy defeats to both Rwanda and Kenya.

In the CECAFA region, Uganda remains the highest-ranked team at position 88 globally, with Kenya now moving into second place in the region at position 111.

Tanzania dropped to position 113 after losing three places, largely affected by their shock 1-0 defeat to Liechtenstein, which saw them lose significant ranking points.

Globally, France has climbed to the top of the FIFA rankings, overtaking Spain, who dropped to second place. Argentina, England, Portugal, Brazil, the Netherlands, Morocco, Belgium, and Germany complete the top ten, with Morocco maintaining its position as Africa’s highest-ranked nation. Senegal, Nigeria, Algeria, and Egypt follow closely to complete the continent’s top five.

For Harambee Stars, the latest FIFA ranking movement serves as encouragement and a clear indication that consistent performances on the international stage can steadily restore Kenya’s status in African football.

With young players such as Zech Obiero and Ryan Ogam stepping up and delivering when called upon, the future looks promising as the team shifts focus to upcoming competitions and long-term targets, including the Africa Cup of Nations that will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
