Harambee Stars defender Zak Vyner delivered another composed performance as Wrexham AFC secured a vital 2-0 victory over Welsh rivals Swansea City in the EFL Championship on Friday night.
The Kenyan international lasted the entire 90 minutes at STōK Cae Ras, operating in an unfamiliar defensive midfield role as Wrexham strengthened their grip on the Championship play-off places with an impressive derby victory.
Vyner, a former Bristol City defender, was deployed just in front of the backline by head coach Phil Parkinson and played a key role in shielding the defence while helping the hosts control key phases of the game.

The match began at a lively pace, with Swansea creating the first opportunity within the opening minutes when Gonçalo Franco capitalised on a loose pass. However, his effort from distance posed little threat and was comfortably gathered by goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo.
Wrexham gradually grew into the contest and nearly broke the deadlock early on when Issa Kaboré delivered a cross that found the head of Nathan Broadhead, but Swansea goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux reacted quickly to claw the ball away from danger.
Despite enjoying more possession during the first half, Swansea were unable to turn their control into goals. Their best chance arrived when Zan Vipotnik was played through on goal, but Okonkwo produced a crucial save to deny the striker.
That moment proved decisive as Wrexham struck minutes later to take the lead. Defender Callum Doyle threaded a perfectly weighted pass into the box, allowing Broadhead to show excellent composure before beating his marker and firing past Vigouroux after 25 minutes.
The Red Dragons continued to push for a second goal before the break, with Kaboré again causing problems down the right flank. His cross found Sam Smith inside the area, but the forward could not stretch enough to guide the ball into the net.
Vyner also played a part in one of Wrexham’s promising attacking moves late in the first half, producing a quick first-time pass that released Kaboré down the right wing, although Smith once again failed to capitalise on the opportunity.
The second half was more cautious as both teams struggled to create clear openings. Swansea attempted to find an equaliser through Marko Stamenic and Malick Yalcouyé, but Okonkwo remained alert in goal to protect Wrexham’s lead.
With the match heading towards its closing stages, Wrexham eventually sealed the result in the 87th minute. George Thomason whipped in a dangerous cross that was met by Doyle, whose effort deflected into the net to secure all three points.
The victory was particularly significant for Parkinson’s side, as it lifted Wrexham further into the top six and kept their play-off ambitions firmly on track.
For Vyner, the performance marked another solid outing for both club and country. The Kenyan defender’s versatility was on full display as he adapted comfortably to the midfield role, helping Wrexham maintain defensive stability while contributing to the team’s build-up play in a hard-fought Welsh derby win.
