Elizabeth Mideva emerged as the hero for Kenya’s Rising Starlets after scoring a decisive late goal to hand the hosts a narrow 1-0 victory over Tanzania in the first leg of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.
The Arch Bishop Njenga Girls forward delivered when it mattered most, silencing Tanzania’s noisy contingent and giving Kenya a crucial advantage ahead of the return leg in Dar es Salaam.
The closely contested encounter lived up to its billing, with both sides showing intensity, tactical discipline, and a clear hunger to gain early control of the tie.

Elizabeth Mideva’s late strike hands Rising Starlets advantage over Tanzania
Kenya head coach Jackline Juma set her team up with an attacking mindset, deploying an all-out offensive line led by captain Fasila Adhiambo, Elizabeth Mideva, Lorna Faith, and Valerie Nekesa.
The intention was clear from the onset as the Rising Starlets looked to press high and exploit Tanzania’s backline early.
That approach nearly paid off in the opening minute when Fasila Adhiambo released Mideva through on goal. The forward delivered a dangerous cross, but Tanzania goalkeeper Nusra Hamisi reacted quickly to smother the ball and deny Kenya an early breakthrough.

Tanzania responded in the sixth minute through a corner taken by Hasnath Linus, but the Kenyan defense stood firm. A lively interchange between Nekesa and Mideva later in the half almost unlocked the Tanzanian defense, only for Mideva’s snapshot to be blocked for a corner.
Tanzania relied heavily on experience, with Jamila Rajabu, Ester Maseke, and Asha Omary dictating play. Omary tested goalkeeper Christine Adhiambo with a long-range effort in the 12th minute, but the Kenyan shot-stopper was equal to the task.
Kenya continued to threaten on the counter, particularly through the energetic Valerie Nekesa. In the 28th minute, she found Mideva with a perfectly weighted through ball, but Ester Maseke produced a timely block to deny Kenya the opener.
Tanzania made a tactical substitution in the 34th minute, introducing Winfrida Rajab for Yasinta Joseph in a bid to gain control of midfield.
The visitors nearly took the lead in stoppage time of the first half when Winfrida Gerald found the net, only for the goal to be ruled out for a foul on Lorine Ilavonga.
Coach Jackline Juma made a key change at halftime, bringing on Hilder Natecho for Pearl Olesi to inject fresh energy into midfield. Tanzania started the second half strongly and almost capitalized on a defensive lapse, but Gerald blasted over the bar from close range.

As the game wore on, Kenya made further changes, introducing Emily Moranga for Lorna Faith in the 74th minute. The substitution proved inspired.
In the 85th minute, Moranga held up play brilliantly in the danger area before laying the ball off to Mideva, who calmly fired past Nusra Hamisi to send the home crowd into celebration.
Tanzania pushed for an equalizer late on, with Hasnath Linus missing a gilt-edged chance and Hamisi later producing a superb save to deny Nekesa in added time.
Kenya held on to secure a vital 1-0 win, with Mideva’s goal proving the difference. The Rising Starlets will now turn their focus to the second leg, scheduled for February 15 at the Azam Complex in Tanzania, where a place in the next round will be at stake.
