Curtains are falling on 2025, and when most Kenyans are asked how the year was, many may describe it as a rollercoaster.

Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024

It is evident that for many, when recalling the standout moments of 2025, CHAN will undoubtedly feature on their list.

This was one of the most significant events Kenya experienced after co-hosting the tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania in August.

CHAN succeeded in uniting Kenyans, with stadiums filling up not only for Harambee Stars matches but even for other fixtures.

I recall the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, being filled to capacity for every match Kenya hosted.

The palpable joy and collective support pushed the national team through to the quarterfinals after they topped Group A, which included African giants like Morocco, Angola, Zambia, and DR Congo.

The event was so massive that ticketing became a major issue, with tickets selling out within hours.

At times, passionate fans even breached security a situation that, unfortunately, led to hefty fines for Kenya and a reduction in permitted attendance.

The final alone, which did not feature Harambee Stars, attracted over 45,000 spectators as Morocco defeated Madagascar at Kasarani Stadium.

CHAN truly revealed the power of sports to unite Kenyans.

At that moment, it was the talk of the nation, fostering unity, motivating players, and creating unforgettable memories for everyone involved.

Road to BAL 2026: Elite 16 – East Division – Nairobi City Thunder Champions

Truth be told, basketball has not traditionally anchored deeply in Kenya nor attracted as much attention as football.

However, something promising has been unfolding over the past two years. That something is Nairobi City Thunder.

This team has genuinely revived basketball enthusiasm in the country, and its achievements in 2025 cannot be overlooked. Why?

NCT qualified for the Basketball Africa League for the second consecutive time – a historic feat, making them the sole Kenyan team ever to do so.

They hosted the Elite 16 East Division in November 2025 at the Kasarani Indoor Arena, and Bradley Ibs’s charges not only defended their title but also secured qualification for next year’s BAL.

Though the sport lacks widespread visibility, the team still managed to rally the nation- the arena was packed to the brim during their matches, with fans even struggling to find seats.

From collective chants to shared euphoria, the support showcased the unifying power of sports and how it can bring a nation together.

Africa Women’s 7s Cup 2025 and Safari 7s

Similar to basketball, rugby in Kenya, specifically these two tournaments, did not receive the marketing or visibility it deserved.

However, that did not prevent fans from uniting and attending in strong numbers.

The Safari 7s in October saw both the national team Kenya Shujaa and the Kenya Lionesses shine, each claiming titles.

Mashemeji Derby – Gor Mahia vs AFC Leopards

In 2025, three Mashemeji Derbies were held – including fixtures from the SportPesa League 2024/25 season and the first leg of the 2025/26 season in December.

This rivalry remains one of the key sporting events in the country and a major factor in bringing Kenyans together. All three matches in 2025 were packed.

Kip Keino Classic 2025

Though perhaps not as widely followed as other events, the Kip Keino Classic was still a headline act in 2025.

It drew thousands of Kenyans to the Ulinzi Sports Complex in May, with elite athletes like Ferdinand Omanyala taking part.
