Algeria booked their place in the knockout stages of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a narrow but disciplined 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso in Rabat, a result that underlined their growing control of Group E rather than their attacking flair.

In a contest that rarely caught fire, it was captain Riyad Mahrez who once again proved decisive, calmly converting a first-half penalty to settle a low-key encounter.

Vladimir Petkovic’s side came into the match knowing that another positive result would all but secure qualification, and they approached the game with a measured, risk-averse game plan.

Desert Foxes edge Burkina Faso to seal knockout spot

Algeria dominated possession in the early exchanges without carving out clear-cut chances, circulating the ball patiently across midfield and probing for openings down the flanks through Rayan Ait-Nouri and Youcef Atal.

The game’s first major talking point arrived inside the opening 20 minutes when Burkina Faso midfielder Gustavo Sangaré flew into a reckless challenge.

Referee Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea was sent to the pitch-side monitor following a VAR review, and many expected a red card.

Instead, Sangaré was let off with a yellow, much to Algeria’s frustration, but it proved to be a temporary reprieve for the Stallions.

Burkina Faso’s resistance was finally broken in the 23rd minute. Ismahila Ouedraogo was penalised for a clumsy challenge on Ait-Nouri inside the box, and Mahrez stepped up with trademark composure.

The Algerian skipper sent goalkeeper Hervé Koffi the wrong way, rolling his spot-kick into the bottom left corner to give the Desert Foxes a deserved lead.

To their credit, Burkina Faso responded with renewed intent. Pierre Kabore went close just minutes later, dragging a low effort inches wide of the upright, before coming even closer shortly before the break.

His powerful header crashed against the post, with Bertrand Traoré’s follow-up blocked in a crowded penalty area as Algeria scrambled clear.

At the other end, Mohamed Amoura nearly doubled the advantage, only for Koffi to pull off an excellent reflex save to keep his side in contention.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Algeria dictating the tempo and Burkina Faso looking to threaten on the counter and from set pieces.

Koffi continued to shine between the posts, denying Ibrahim Maza after he found space in the box and later reacting sharply to keep out another Ait-Nouri effort.

Hicham Boudaoui wasted a decent chance with a free header, summing up Algeria’s inability to put the game to bed.

Burkina Faso’s best opportunity for an equaliser came through Lassina Traoré, whose towering header was directed straight at Luca Zidane, allowing the Algerian goalkeeper to gather comfortably.

From there, Algeria managed the closing stages expertly, slowing the game down and limiting any late pressure.

The victory makes it two wins from two for Algeria, confirming their progression to the knockout rounds and reinforcing their credentials as a tournament dark horse.

For Burkina Faso, defeat means their fate will be decided in a winner-takes-all clash against Sudan, where they will need a sharper cutting edge to keep their AFCON campaign alive.
