Burkina Faso were pushed to the very edge before clawing their way back in extraordinary fashion to beat Equatorial Guinea 2-1 in a dramatic Group E opener at the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, a match that encapsulated the tournament’s growing reputation for late drama and fine margins.

For long spells in Casablanca, the Stallions looked set to become the first heavyweight casualty of the competition.

Ranked significantly higher than their opponents and boasting proven European-based talent, Burkina Faso dominated possession, territory and chances, yet found themselves staring at an embarrassing defeat deep into stoppage time against a side reduced to ten men shortly after the break.

The turning point initially appeared to favour Burkina Faso when Basilio Ndong was dismissed five minutes after half-time for a reckless stamp on Bertrand Traoré’s ankle.

With Equatorial Guinea down a man, the game seemed poised to follow a familiar script. Burkina Faso poured forward relentlessly, with Dango Ouattara stretching the defence and Traoré pulling the strings between the lines.

Lassina Traoré even thought he had broken the deadlock, only for his effort to be chalked off for offside, adding to the Stallions’ growing frustration.

Yet football has a habit of punishing wastefulness. Against the run of play and with just five minutes of normal time remaining, Equatorial Guinea struck. Marvin Aniebo rose highest to meet Carlos Akapo’s corner, steering a precise header past Hervé Koffi to send shockwaves through the stadium.

It was a moment of belief for the National Thunder, who had absorbed pressure with remarkable discipline and resilience despite their numerical disadvantage.

What followed, however, was pure AFCON chaos. Refusing to accept defeat, Burkina Faso threw everything forward in the dying minutes.

Their equaliser arrived in the 95th minute when Georgi Minoungou reacted quickest inside the box to smash home from close range after sustained pressure finally cracked the Equatorial Guinea back line. The sense of relief was palpable, but the Stallions were not done.

Just three minutes later, Edmond Tapsoba completed the turnaround. The Bayer Leverkusen defender powered in a decisive header after goalkeeper Jesús Owono failed to deal convincingly with a dangerous cross, sealing a comeback that will live long in AFCON folklore.

From despair to jubilation in the blink of an eye, Burkina Faso had somehow secured all three points.

For Equatorial Guinea, the defeat was cruel. Ranked 97th in the world, they delivered a performance full of courage, organisation and tactical intelligence, even after losing Ndong to a red card.

They came within seconds of recording one of the biggest upsets of the tournament and will take heart from pushing a strong Burkina Faso side to the absolute limit.

Burkina Faso, meanwhile, will reflect on a nervy outing that exposed their inefficiency in front of goal but also highlighted their mental strength.

With tougher tests ahead, including a looming clash against Algeria, the Stallions know they cannot afford such lapses again. Still, in a tournament where survival often matters more than style, this heart-stopping victory may prove invaluable as the group stage unfolds.
