If Africa Cup of Nations history was the only currency that mattered, Tunisia would already have three points in the bag.

Tunisia step into AFCON 2025 with the quiet confidence of a side that believes it unfinished business.

Champions once before on home soil in 2004, the North Africans have long been regulars at this stage, often consistent, rarely spectacular.

Their ambition this time is clear: go one step further than the disappointments of recent editions and finally reclaim continental relevance.

On the surface, the signs are encouraging.

Tunisia were ruthless in their World Cup qualifying campaign, winning nine matches and drawing one without conceding a single goal.

That defensive perfection, however, masks a growing concern. Since then, they have conceded in six of their last seven matches across all competitions, a worrying statistic for a team that prides itself on defensive control and structure.

That vulnerability becomes even more glaring when viewed through the lens of AFCON 2023, where Tunisia exited embarrassingly at the group stage after two draws and a defeat.

For all their pedigree, the Carthage Eagles have developed a habit of starting tournaments cautiously, sometimes too cautiously and that hesitation could be their biggest flaw against a hungry Uganda Cranes side.

Uganda arrive in Morocco with history chasing them rather than history weighing them down.

Runners-up in 1978, the Cranes have struggled to make a deep impact at AFCON in the modern era, with their only win at the tournament since that famous run coming against DR Congo in 2019.

Yet this squad feels different in temperament if not in reputation. Paul Put’s side comes into the competition with a decent run of form and, more importantly, clarity of purpose.

They know they are underdogs. They also know Tunisia have never beaten them by simply blowing teams away.

The psychological mountain remains steep; Uganda have lost all six previous meetings against Tunisia but Put refuses to be distracted by numbers.

“I’m not moved by records,” the Belgian said. “What I know is that Tunisia is a very good side capable of getting results against every team. So, our preparations will be focused on where we can hurt them, not their previous performance.”

That mindset alone gives could give The Cranes an edge they have sometimes lacked at this stage.

Tunisia vs Uganda team news

Tunisia coach Sami Trabelsi has largely stuck with the core group from the November internationals.

One his lethal arsenals will be Augsburg midfielder Elias Saad who comes into the tournament in strong form, boasting four goal contributions in his last six appearances for the national team. His movement between the lines could be key against Uganda’s compact midfield.

Ellyes Skhiri and Hannibal Mejbri have also been recalled to the squad having missed out the November FIFA International break.Defensive stalwarts Yassine Meriah, Dylan Bronn,Ali Maaloul and Ali Abdi all made the travelling party and are likely to form the backbone of Tunisia’s approach.

Uganda, meanwhile, received a major boost with confirmation that there are no injury concerns.

Veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango is expected to start and marshal the defence, while Allan Okello who eyes to use the Afcon 2025 to get better club deals abroad carries the creative responsibility in attack.

Put confirmed the fitness of key players ahead of the opener

“Rogers Mato, Jude Ssemugabi and Jordan Obita all had issues but we have been working on them in the last few days and I believe everyone is ready, starting with the game against Tunisia.”

Tunisia’s strength lies in their defensive organisation and midfield balance, but that same structure can become predictable.

If Uganda can disrupt their rhythm early, particularly through Okello’s pressing and quick transitions, the Carthage Eagles may be forced into uncomfortable spaces.

For Uganda, The leadership of Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Onyango and captain Khalid Aucho’s influence in midfield will be vital.

Tunisia rarely panic, but they do slow down when denied space , a flaw Uganda must exploit with pace from Rogers Mato and direct running from Simba forward Steven Dese Mukwala.

Tunisia’s experience and depth still make them favourites, but this is far from a routine opener.

Uganda’s discipline and fearlessness could expose Tunisia’s recent defensive cracks, especially if the match remains level deep into the second half.

A narrow win for the Carthage Eagles but not without moments that suggest this AFCON journey may be trickier than they expect.
