Record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia returned to winning ways in the SportPesa League with a narrow 1-0 victory over Kakamega Homeboyz on Wednesday evening at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

A crisp first-half strike from the sensational midfielder Alpha Onyango proved the decisive goal, allowing K’Ogalo to snap their three-match winless streak- comprising two losses and a draw.

Kakamega Homeboyz signaled their intent mere seconds after kickoff, nearly taking the lead when Kevin Amwayi unleashed a shot toward the far right corner of Bryne Omondi’s goal, only for the attempt to strike the woodwork.

Gor waited until the 13th minute for their first clear opportunity. Felix Olouch came agonizingly close with a header from a deep free-kick on the left, but his effort was deflected for a corner.

Ben Stanely’s subsequent volley fell to Sharrif Musa, whose shot was blocked out for another corner, which ultimately came to nothing.

After a quiet opening 18 minutes, the match sparked to life.

Following a well-orchestrated build-up, Gor Mahia won a corner on the right.

Morrison’s delivery found Michael Kibwage, who deftly laid the ball off to Alpha Onyango just outside the box.

Onyango unleashed a powerful, precise drive with his right foot that arrowed through a crowd of defenders and into the far left corner of Simon Masaka’s net, giving K’Ogalo the lead.

Gor created three subsequent chances through Sharrif Musa and Olouch but failed to convert, even as they controlled proceedings. Ebenezer Adukwaw’s clear opportunity forced Masaka into a sharp leg save, denying the hosts a second goal.

From their early shot at kickoff, Patrick Odhiambo’s Homeboyz struggled to carve out clear openings as Gor dominated the midfield. The sides went into the break with the champions leading 1-0.

The second half continued in the same vein, with Gor crafting another excellent chance in the 61st minute.

Olouch surged forward into space and dribbled into a promising position, but his final shot was directed straight into Masaka’s waiting gloves, keeping Homeboyz in contention.

With just ten minutes remaining, Homeboyz fashioned a late chance to equalize.

Lopaga delivered an inviting cross into the box for Oliver Machaka, who could only fire directly into Omondi’s hands as the visitors began to camp in Gor’s final third.

The former FKF Cup champions threw everything forward in search of an equalizer, but Gor Mahia’s backline stood firm to protect their slender advantage, ultimately securing all three points at home and marking a return to winning form.
