Kenya Lionesses Africa Women’s 7s on home soil

The national women’s rugby 7s team, the Kenya Lionesses, preserved their perfect record in the Africa Women’s 7s 2025 tournament, advancing to the main cup quarterfinals after a decisive 37-0 victory over Ghana on Saturday evening at the RFUEA Grounds.

Both sides entered this crucial Group B encounter in strong form, having each convincingly defeated Cote d’Ivoire in their opening matches.

Kenya Lionesses secured a 44-0 win, while Ghana delivered a commanding 57-0 performance.

The stage was set for a showdown to determine the group leader, a challenge the host nation met by stepping up to secure the win.

This victory sets up a cup quarterfinal clash against Zimbabwe on Sunday at the same venue.

Kenya Lionesses vs Ghana

The Lionesses launched the game with immediate dominance, opening the scoring within just two minutes. Grace Okulu broke through a stout Ghanaian defensive line to touch down, giving Kenya a 7-0 lead after she successfully added the conversion.

A minute later, Freshia Odour on the left flank dotted down for a five-pointer, extending the lead for Simon Odongo’s squad to 12-0 after the conversion was missed.

The first-half offensive continued as captain Sheila Chajira powered through the Ghanaian defense for a third try, pushing the score to 17-0.

Winger Janet Okello then capped off the dominant half with a well-taken try on the left wing, sending the Lionesses into the break with a commanding 22-0 advantage.

After the restart, Kenya picked up where they left off, with Okello slicing through for another score on the left flank.

Maureen Muruti then joined the scoresheet, crossing the line for a try of her own as the Lionesses continued to control the game, stretching the lead to 32-0.

Debutant Nelly Shikombe, replicating her performance from the first match against Cote d’Ivoire, put the final exclamation point on the match.

The 25-year-old sealed the comprehensive 37-0 victory, cementing the team’s place in the quarterfinals.

The Kenya Lionesses will now face Zimbabwe in the quarterfinals on Sunday, while Ghana will open the cup quarterfinal stage against the reigning champions, South Africa.
